Well-known actress Neena Gupta, who has lived almost four decades in the entertainment world, has seen a lot of ups and downs not only in her personal life but also in her career. But ‘Badhaai Ho’ proved to be a turning point for him/her. Neena, who has played many types of female characters, is now once again seen in a rural color in ‘Panchayat 3’. A special conversation with him/her.

The issue of elections is always a hot topic in your latest series ‘Panchayat 3’. There is an election atmosphere in the country also. What are your expectations from the incoming government?

-We just want whatever happens to be good. Whatever government comes, it should come with a selfless spirit. May our country progress. People get employment and the country progresses.

You are also popular on social media with your various posts, but what do you need to keep in mind on these platforms in today’s times?

-To be honest, I have found a platform where I can express my real feelings about Neena. But despite this, one has to speak with great fear on social media. Now, if you had a fight with your husband and you posted that post, but you may have to regret it later on, then you should post your updates on social media very thoughtfully. Whenever I share a post, I think whether it will harm anyone, whether it will make anyone feel bad or whether I will feel bad later. You post something in anger or on impulse, the consequences of which can be serious. I think one should take advantage of social media and be alert.

For a long time, you have been presenting women strongly on screen. Be it the mother of ‘Goodbye’ or the housewife of ‘Vadh’, but what do you generally feel uncomfortable about regarding women?

-There is one word, weak, we are weak. I always say that it is very sad to be a woman, because a woman has to suffer a lot. Especially for a poor woman. I say that God forbid any woman should have to go through poverty. I want to do a lot for the underprivileged women of the society, but am unable to do so. Even in a city like Mumbai, we see women living and sleeping on the streets. Their children are roaming around on the road. Their condition pricks my heart like a thorn, the worst thing I feel is that I am unable to do anything for them. I am just talking now, but have I done anything for them? This question keeps troubling me.

navbharat timesWhen a person said this to Neena Gupta’s daughter, ‘How bad you look’, Masaba also gave a befitting reply.

Today, many feminist characters are seen on OTT. What is the definition of feminism for you?

-Financial dependence is very important for me. If you are strong from within, you are empowered. What God has given me, being a woman, what I can become and create is my strength. I have always worked on the same strength. Right now I am enjoying this phase of my career and life very much.

And when have you felt the best as a woman?

-If I talk about my career, after ‘Badhaai Ho’ it is a happy chapter in my life. After that, roles started being written keeping me in mind. I had gone through bad times in my career, but after that everything changed. If I talk about my personal life, I felt the most happiness on the birth of Masaba.

Recently, on Mother’s Day, I saw a post about your daughter Masaba, what kind of mother do you consider yourself?

-You will have to ask Masaba about this. You will know all the inside information. (Laughs) That is a poem by Maithilisharan Gupta, ‘There is milk in the lap and water in the eyes’, this is the definition of every mother. Mother is always worried about her children. I believe that mother’s worries and challenges for children increase with their age, but do not decrease. So I am always worried about Masaba.

The third season of ‘Panchayat’ is going to come. How has your rural character Manju Devi been challenging for you?

-People think that I wear glamorous clothes, so I would like roles too, but if you look at my career, I have not done many glamorous roles. I have not played such glamorous characters as I wear in real life. Yes, to some extent the character of Manju Devi was initially challenging for me, because of her language. I worked a lot on the language, worked hard to capture its dialect, but then this journey was fun for me.
