What is BHISHM Cube?

BHISHM Cube is an advanced portable mobile hospital unit. It has been developed under ‘Project BHISHM’ i.e. Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hit, and Maitri. This project was announced in February 2022. Project Bhishma was started under the leadership of PM Modi. The purpose of this portable hospital is to highlight the commitment to provide rapid medical assistance in disaster-affected areas. It reflects the country’s growing role in global humanitarian efforts. An effort has been made to provide quick treatment to people in disaster and war-torn areas through Bhishma Cube.

Why is this Bhishma Cube special?

BHISHM Cube is a marvel of modern medical engineering. Its most special feature is that it can be easily dropped in disaster and war-affected areas through parachute. This cube can be immediately helpful in handling 200 affected people simultaneously. Weighing 720 kg, this unit has 72 easily transportable components. The innovative design of the cube allows it to be started within just 12 minutes of deployment, this is an important feature in emergencies where every second counts.

An amazing example of modern medical engineering

These cubes are extremely robust, waterproof and lightweight. They are equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, including an operation theatre, X-ray machine, ventilators and facilities for treating different injuries. The BHISHM Cube is a comprehensive solution for disaster management. Its robust, waterproof design ensures durability in different environments. It can be carried by airplanes as well as ground transportation.

The Bhishma Cube integrates artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics, facilitating real-time monitoring, effective coordination and efficient management of medical services in affected areas. This advanced technology allows accurate tracking of medical supplies, including their use and expiry dates. The inclusion of RFID-tagged devices further enhances the Cube’s operational efficiency, enabling quick and repeated packaging and deployment.

This cube has been successfully tested

The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully tested the deployment of the BHISHM Cube at Malpura dropping zone in Agra in May 2024. The cube was air-dropped from a height of 1500 feet using a specially designed parachute developed by the Agra-based Air Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE). ‘Project BHISHM’ stands for Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hit and Maitri. The hospital became fully operational within 12 minutes of landing.
