PM Modi invites semiconductor companies from Singapore to Semicon India exhibition


Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with his/her Singapore counterpart Lawrence Wong visited the semiconductor plant of AEM Holdings Limited and invited semiconductor companies from Singapore to participate in the Semicon India exhibition to be held from September 11-13 in Greater Noida.

According to a Ministry of External Affairs press release, during the visit to the semiconductor facility, Prime Minister Modi and Lawrence Wong were briefed on AEM’s role in the global semiconductor value chain, its operations, and its plans for India.

In a press release, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “The Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association briefed on the development of the semiconductor ecosystem in Singapore and opportunities for cooperation with India.”

“Representatives from several other Singaporean companies in the sector were also present. The Prime Minister invited Singaporean semiconductor companies to participate in the SEMICON India exhibition to be held in Greater Noida on 11-13 September 2024,” it said.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Modi and Lawrence Wong also interacted with Indian trainees from the World Skills Centre, Odisha undergoing training in Singapore, as well as Singaporean trainees who came to India under the CII-Enterprise Singapore India Ready Talent Programme and Indian engineers working at AEM.

“Given our efforts to develop the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India and Singapore’s strength in this sector, the two sides have decided to expand bilateral cooperation,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

“During the second India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable meeting, the two sides agreed to add advanced manufacturing with a focus on semiconductors as a pillar to enhance bilateral cooperation. The two sides also concluded the MoU on India-Singapore Semiconductor Ecosystem Partnership,” it said.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that the visit of Prime Minister Modi and Lawrence Wong to the semiconductor facility underlined the commitment of both sides to develop cooperation in this area. Prime Minister Modi expressed his/her appreciation to Singapore Prime Minister Wong for joining him/her on this visit.

In a post on X, Randhir Jaiswal, official spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, said, “The India-Singapore skills partnership is growing stronger. During the visit to AEM Holdings, PM @narendramodi and PM @LawrenceWongST interacted with Indian trainees from the World Skills Centre in Odisha, as well as Singaporean trainees who came to India under the CII-Enterprise Singapore India Ready Talent Programme and Indian engineers working at AEM.”

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi held a meeting with his/her Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong and the talks focused on enhancing cooperation between the two countries in various areas, including skills, healthcare, artificial intelligence.

Speaking to X, PM Modi said, “Discussions continued today with my friend, PM Lawrence Wong. Our talks focused on enhancing cooperation in skills, technology, healthcare, AI and other areas. We both agreed on the need to boost trade ties.”

India and Singapore on Thursday exchanged four key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) during the second day of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the island nation.

These agreements include cooperation in digital technologies, partnership in the semiconductor sector, joint initiatives in health and medicine, and cooperation in education and skill development.

The MoUs were exchanged by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan at the Parliament House in Singapore in the presence of Prime Minister Modi and his/her Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong.

Before the meeting, PM Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Parliament House in Singapore on Thursday. Wong welcomed PM Modi and the two leaders greeted each other warmly.

They signed the visitor’s book at the Parliament House. Prime Minister Modi and Lawrence Wong met ministers and representatives of each other’s countries.

Before arriving in Singapore, Prime Minister Modi was on an official visit to Brunei. During his/her visit, he/she held talks with Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah at Istana Nurul Iman in Bandar Seri Begawan.
