PM Modi called Britain’s new Prime Minister Starmer and congratulated him/her, invited him/her to visit India


New Delhi : After the victory of the Labour Party in Britain, PM Modi spoke to the new PM Keir Starmer over the phone. PM Modi congratulated Starmer on his/her victory. According to the PMO, Prime Minister Modi also invited the British PM to visit India. During the conversation, Modi recalled the historical relations between India and Britain. Along with this, he/she expressed commitment to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

Prime Minister Modi and his/her British counterpart agreed to work towards early conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-UK Free Trade Agreement. The two leaders emphasised the importance of strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in various fields. Appreciating the positive contribution of the Indian community to the social, economic and political development of the UK, they agreed to promote closer people-to-people ties, a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office said.
“Glad to speak to Keir Starmer. Congratulate him/her on becoming the Prime Minister of Britain. We are committed to deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership and strong India-UK economic ties for the progress and prosperity of our people and global good,” Modi said in a post on ‘X’.

Sunak was also congratulated

Earlier on Friday, PM Modi had congratulated Starmer on his/her victory through ex-post. he/she thanked outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for his/her commendable leadership of Britain and his/her active contribution in deepening the relations between India and Britain during his/her tenure. he/she also wished Sunak and his/her family all the best for the future.

Biggest win since 1997

Britain witnessed a significant change in the political landscape. There, Labour won 412 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons. This was their best performance since Tony Blair’s 1997 victory. The Conservatives won only 121 seats, their worst result ever.
