‘Plight’ of Indian students in Canada! SGPC angry with Trudeau government, put forward this demand regarding students

Indian Students in Canada: Canada is very popular as a study abroad destination among Indian students. However, for some time now it is becoming difficult for Indians to live in Canada. Sometimes changes are being made in visa rules and sometimes study permits are being cut. Indian students are also facing problems from their colleges. In August, hundreds of Indian students were failed in Brampton, where they also demonstrated against their college.
However, seeing the plight of Indian students in Canada, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) is very angry. SGPC has made it clear that the problems of the students should be resolved immediately. A large number of students from Punjab go to Canada to study. SGPC appealed to the Government of Canada and Sikh leaders there as well as the Ministry of External Affairs of India to address the problems faced by Indian students in Canada, especially those from Punjab.

Students taking to the streets to solve problems: SGPC President

SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami took cognizance of the demonstration conducted by students in Brampton city of Canada. he/she said that on one hand, the Canadian government has allowed a large number of international students to come here. On the other hand, students have to take to the streets to solve their problems. he/she urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Canadian Sikh leaders and Gurdwara committees to intervene in the matter.

Demand for help from Canadian Sikh MPs

Harjinder Singh Dhami said that a large number of Sikhs are working in government and administrative positions in Canada. They should negotiate with the Canadian government to resolve the grievances of the students and children in their community. he/she specifically asked Canadian Sikh MPs Harjit Singh Sajjan, Jagmeet Singh and Brampton Deputy Mayor Harkirat Singh to look into the issue. A large number of people from the Indian community live in Brampton. Indians constitute 27% of the city’s population.

What happened in Brampton?

More than 200 Indian students studying at St. Clair College in Brampton protested on August 28 after failing in their exams. A group of postgraduate students gathered in Garden Square, Brampton and demanded that they be given grace marks for passing. The students claimed that the college had failed them without any reason. A video of this also surfaced, in which students were seen protesting with placards in their hands.
