26 petitions seeking cancellation of NEET 2024

More than 50 candidates from Gujarat who cleared NEET UG have filed a petition in the Supreme Court. It has been demanded that SC direct the Center and NTA not to cancel the NEET exam held on May 5. This petition has been filed at a time when in a few days, a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is going to hear 26 NEET petitions. In these petitions, there is a demand for re-conducting the NEET exam (Re NEET) and investigation of the earlier exam.

The petition states that the apex court should direct the central government and NTA not to conduct NEET-UG again. Because it will not only be harmful for honest and hardworking students, but will also be a violation of the Right to Education (RTE Violation). Article 14 (Right to Equality) of the Constitution will be violated.

What did PM Modi say on NEET?

On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on the NEET issue that ‘We wanted that the issue of students’ interests should have been raised in the House, rising above party politics, but this did not happen.’ Giving assurance to the students, the PM said that ‘the government will not spare those who cheat them. Action is being taken on this issue. Action is being taken to ensure that those who play with the future of the youth get strict punishment.’

What is the issue of NEET?

The NTA conducts the NEET UG exam for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions. The exam was held on May 5 this year at 4,750 centers, in which about 24 lakh candidates appeared. Allegations of irregularities including NEET UG paper leak led to protests in many cities. Opposition parties raised the issue. Petitions seeking cancellation of the previous exam, re-examination and high-level investigation will be heard in the Supreme Court on July 8.
