Affordable countries for PhD program: Doctor of Philosophy i.e. PhD is also known as terminal degree. This is the highest degree obtained in the study of any subject. In India also a large number of students do PhD every year. There are some students who want to do PhD after completing research abroad. However, due to the expenses incurred abroad, students are forced to forget this dream.
After doing PhD, students’ career also gets a big boost. It usually takes three to five years to complete a PhD. Some people also do part-time PhD, which takes six to seven years. During this time, some people have to take extension to complete their thesis. By doing this the expenses of the students also keep increasing. However, there are some countries where PhD is done for free or at very low fees.

Where is the cheapest PhD?

Sweden: In the European country Sweden, PhD studies are free. In Sweden, one of the beautiful countries of the world, there are some subjects in which one does not have to pay a single rupee as fee for doing PhD. This includes the field of renewable energy. Sweden also has some of the world’s top universities. Seven universities from Sweden have been included in the top 350 universities of the QS World University Rankings 2025. KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Lund University are the top institutes in the country.

Norway: In Norway, another country in Europe, PhD can be done by spending the least amount of money. Even though foreign students will have to pay tuition fees here from 2023, the fees here are still very affordable. PhD candidates do not get student status in Norway. Instead they are considered an employee. Therefore, they do not have to pay any tuition fees. Norway’s top institutions include the University of Oslo and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Finland: The Nordic country Finland is one of the most affordable countries to pursue a PhD. At the end of 2023, the government announced that they will fund 1,000 PhD candidates who have completed it over three years. The government also spent about Rs 2600 crore on this. The government wants more and more PhD graduates. Four Finnish universities have been included in the top 350 universities of the QS World University Rankings 2025.

Germany: This European country is becoming increasingly popular among Indians. Germany is known worldwide for its world class education. Universities here do not charge tuition fees from PhD students and instead students have to obtain funding through fellowships. For PhD, students can either get a university doctoral fellowship or apply for various funding programs. 8 institutions from Germany were included in the top 150 universities of QS ranking.

France: PhD is also quite affordable in Germany’s neighboring country France. Under French law, candidates cannot pursue a PhD without funding. They require a contra doctorate, which provides them with a salary and other benefits before admission to a PhD program. In some universities, students may have to pay annual tuition fees, which can be up to Rs 40 thousand. 8 French institutions were included in the top 350 universities of the QS World University Rankings 2025.
