People of Bihar spend the most on food and drink, Kerala spends the least, what is the situation of UP-Haryana?

New Delhi: The share of food items in total living expenses has come down to below 50% in the last 10 years at the national level. However, it is still higher than this in states like Bihar and Assam. The share of food items in the total expenditure of the people of Bihar and Assam is the highest. It is the lowest in Telangana and Kerala. People of states like Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and UP are spending the most on milk and its products in food and drinks. This information has come to the fore in the detailed report of Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2022-23. It has been released by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation. According to the report, the share of food items in total consumption expenditure is the highest in Bihar and Assam at 54% and the lowest in Kerala at 39%. Even in urban areas, this figure was the highest in Bihar and Assam at 47%. The lowest share of 35% was in Telangana. The share of food items in total per capita expenditure in rural areas of UP is 47% and in urban areas it is 41%. In Maharashtra, this figure is 41% and 37% respectively.

Expenditure on food decreased in 10 years
Overall, the average monthly per capita consumption expenditure (MPCE) on food has declined in the last 10 years. In 2011-12, the share of food and beverages in total monthly expenditure in rural areas was 52.9%. In 2022-23, it came down to 46.4%. In cities too, the figure has come down from 42.6% to 39.2%. The average monthly expenditure per person on food and beverages in villages was Rs 1750 and in cities it was Rs 2530.

Haryana spends the most on milk, Kerala spends the most on meat and fish
The share of beverages and processed food in total food consumption has increased from the national average of 9.6%. Most states have the highest expenditure on these. The national average of share of milk and cheese is 8.3%. However, the share of milk and milk products in food consumption is highest in Haryana (41.7%), Rajasthan (35.5%), Punjab (34.7%), Gujarat (25.5%), UP (22.6%) and MP (21.5%). The share of milk and milk products is also highest in urban areas of Rajasthan (33.2%), Haryana (33.1%), Punjab (32.3%) and UP (25.2%).

At the same time, Kerala’s rural areas have the highest share of 23.5% in the total expenditure on food. This is followed by Assam (20%) and West Bengal (18.9%). Haryana’s rural areas have the lowest share of 2.1%. Gujarat and Rajasthan are above this with 2.6% share. In terms of the share of eggs, fish and meat in food in urban areas, Kerala is ahead with 19.8% and West Bengal with 18.9%.

West Bengal has the highest consumption of grains
In terms of grains, the highest consumption of 11.23 kg per person per month is in rural areas of West Bengal. This is followed by Odisha (11.21 kg), Bihar (11.14 kg) and Rajasthan (10.55 kg). UP consumes 9.38 kg and Maharashtra consumes 8.31 kg. Kerala consumes the lowest 6.6 kg.

Among cereals too, Assam has the highest share of rice at 95.93%. It is followed by Chhattisgarh (92.24%) and Telangana (92.06%). The figure is 39.99% in UP and 36.39% in Maharashtra. Rice has the lowest share of 3.19% in the food expenditure of people of Rajasthan. The share of expenditure on wheat in food and drinks is higher for people of Haryana (88.56%), Punjab (87.54%) and Rajasthan (84.77%). In terms of expenditure on non-food items, conveyance has the highest share in rural and urban areas of all major states. It is followed by durable goods and entertainment. Among non-food items, Kerala has the highest share of durable goods.

The gap between cities and villages has decreased
According to the survey, in 2022-23, the average monthly per capita consumption expenditure in rural areas was Rs 3773 and in urban areas it was Rs 6459. In 2010-11, these figures were Rs 1430 and Rs 2630. In this way, expenditure increased by 2.6 times in rural areas and 2.5 times in urban areas. Along with this, the rural-urban gap has decreased. In 2010-11, the average MPCE in cities was 84% ​​higher than in villages. In 2022-23, the gap decreased and it is only about 71% more. – Make small one-liners of all its figures.
