Buckwheat flour is eaten a lot during Navratri. People consume it even on normal days because it is gluten free which provides fiber and protein. It is not considered a complete cereal or grain, but it is a pseudocereal or pseudograin that acts like a grain. This type of millet is a bit expensive, hence the risk of adulteration is high.

In the last few days, many people had to be hospitalized after eating adulterated buckwheat flour. According to TOI, a few days ago, 160 people had to be hospitalized in Meerut alone after eating contaminated buckwheat flour. Due to this he/she started suffering from food poisoning, vomiting and diarrhea.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India According to the WHO, millets can be contaminated and adulterated with poisonous, toxic, harmful seeds and coloring matter, rat hair and urine. To identify these, you can do some easy tests of FSSAI only.

FSSAI It is said that any flour, maida or semolina can be adulterated with sand, insects, lumps, rat hair and excreta. To identify them you will have to examine with your eyes. You can sift the flour and then throw it away if you see anything different.

  1. Put 5 grams of buckwheat flour in a glass.
  2. Add 20ml quantity of carbon tetrachloride in it.
  3. Let this mixture sit.
  4. If there is adulteration of sand or dirt in it, it will start settling at the bottom of the glass.

  1. If you get buckwheat milled then check for ergot in it.
  2. It is a poisonous substance which many people also associate with serious side effects like cancer.
  3. Its grains are long purple-black in appearance.
  4. Put some buckwheat grains in a glass.
  5. Now add 100 ml water mixed with 20 grams of salt in it.
  6. After some time the ergot grains will start floating on the water.

Whenever you buy buckwheat flour from the market, buy it after looking at the use by date on the packet. Apart from this, if it has been more than 2 months since the packet has been opened then do not use it. Some researchers believe that after such a period of time, its color and quality decreases. Also store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry, place.
