Payal Kapadia became the first Indian director to win the Grand Prix at Cannes, the film created history

While Mansi Maheshwari and an FTII student brought laurels to the country by winning the award in the La Cinefe category, Kolkata’s Anasuya Sengupta created history by winning the Best Actress award. And now Payal Kapadia has done wonders. Payal Kapadia has become the first Indian director whose film received the Grand Prix Award at Cannes. This is the first time that an Indian film has received this award at the Cannes Film Festival. Payal Kapadia’s film ‘All We Imagine as Light’ was premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, May 25. Everyone here liked this film and it won the Le Grand Prix Award, the second most prestigious award of Cannes. Payal Kapadia has become the first Indian director to win this award.

This was the first time in the last 30 years that an Indian film won the Grand Prix Award. It was the first Indian film to compete and be selected in this category. After winning the award, Payal Kapadia thanked Cannes and also said that now no Indian film should be made to wait for the next 30 years. Before All We Imagine as Light, in 1994, the Indian film ‘Swaham’ had received a nomination in this category. But she could not win any award then.

Payal Kapadia said this about the film

After receiving the award at the Cannes Film Festival, Payal Kapadia said, ‘This film is about the friendship of three women and sometimes women stand against each other. This is the way society is designed and it is very unfortunate. But for me, friendship is a very important relationship because it can lead to greater solidarity, inclusivity and empathy towards each other.
