Panchayat elections cannot be banned in Punjab… Why did the Supreme Court say this?


New Delhi : The Supreme Court refused to stay the Panchayat elections in Punjab. Voting for Panchayat elections took place in Punjab on Tuesday. At the time of voting on Tuesday, this matter was raised before the Chief Justice and a demand was made to ban the elections. The Chief Justice said that if the courts start banning the elections on the day of voting itself, then it will create a situation of anarchy.

The matter was raised before a bench led by Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. During the hearing on Tuesday, the Chief Justice bench said that if voting has started on Tuesday then how can we interfere in it? The High Court would probably have realized its seriousness and lifted the ban on elections. If we interfere in this on the day of voting, there will be anarchy.

However, the Supreme Court agreed to hear petitions challenging the decision of the Punjab and Haryana High Court allowing panchayat elections in Punjab. In a significant judgment, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had recently rejected nearly 1,000 petitions requesting cancellation of the panchayat elections. Earlier, the High Court had stayed the election process. After which this matter has come before the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court told the petitioner that you can challenge the election results at any time. Banning it during voting in elections will lead to chaos. This is not good for democracy. We have to understand the importance of elections. We will not give any interim order on this and will not impose any interim stay. We will list the case for hearing.
