Pakistan: Commission investigating enforced disappearances registers 197 new cases so far in 2024

In the first half of the year, 197 missing persons cases were submitted to Pakistan’s Commission of Inquiry into Enforced Disappearances (COIOED), reports Dawn.

According to the report released on Monday, the commission said that the total number of cases received till June 30 was 10,285, of which 8,015 cases were resolved. So far, a total of 6,464 people have been traced and 1,551 cases have been resolved.

The commission was set up in 2011 to trace missing persons and fix responsibility for the individuals or organisations responsible, Dawn reported.

The report further stated that 226 cases were settled in the first six months of 2023.

It further said that 2,270 cases were discharged, while 4,514 returned home, 1,002 are present in detention centres, 671 are in jails and 277 were found dead.

According to Dawn, 47 cases were received in June and 28 were resolved, of which 13 were not enforced disappearances, nine were returned to their homes, three were kept in detention centres, two were kept in prisons and the body of one person was recovered.

Earlier on April 23, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar had said the issue of missing persons “cannot be solved overnight” but the government was committed to finding a solution by building a consensus among all stakeholders.

The sit-in camp led by Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP) demanding safe recovery of missing persons completed its 5496th day outside Quetta Press Club on Monday.

The organization, led by people like Mama Qadeer Baloch, is actively engaged in peaceful protests and advocacy efforts to draw attention to the issue of enforced disappearances in the region.

However, since 2000 there has been a gradual increase in political and intellectual maturity among the Baloch as they continue their struggle.

Mama Qadeer Baloch condemned Pakistan Army for forcefully abducting Baloch youth and called it violation of international human rights laws.

he/she criticised Pakistan for the disposal of the bodies of the abducted youths while praising the disciplined approach adopted by the Baloch community for their recovery in a peaceful manner.
