Opposition’s regret, Congress spoiled the game otherwise NDA government would not have been formed this time

New Delhi: There is happiness among the parties of the opposition alliance including Congress that their efforts have borne fruit this time in the Lok Sabha elections and BJP could not get the majority figure on its own. Big leaders like Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge are even calling it a moral defeat of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The parties of the opposition alliance expressed happiness over the results of June 4, but now their meetings are being held in closed rooms. Now instead of excitement, they are engaged in serious analysis of the election results. There is a strong feeling among many leaders that the regional allies of the Congress have played a more effective role than the Congress in preventing the BJP from getting a majority on its own and have performed better. In comparison, the Congress party, which contested the maximum number of seats in the India Alliance, continued its trend of disappointing performance in direct competition with the BJP in the Hindi belt, except for a few exceptions. Some non-Congress opposition leaders said that the Congress got many of its seats by defeating its allies, the leftist parties and some regional parties. It could improve its performance on most of the seats only with the help of allies.

They stopped BJP’s victory chariot, Congress remained defeated

The most important factor in slowing down the BJP’s victory chariot was the spectacular performance of India Block allies like Akhilesh Yadav-led SP, Mamata Banerjee-led TMC, Uddhav Thackeray-led SS (UTC) and Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SCP). All of them brought in numbers for the alliance in the three biggest and politically important states of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra, where only a good performance could have helped the BJP get bumper results. There is a lot of discussion in opposition circles that MK Stalin-led DMK won 22 seats in Tamil Nadu. Congress could win only nine seats in Tamil Nadu only on the strength of it and other alliance partners. This performance of DMK is very big in this case because it has been in power in the state for the last 10 years and it has also dominated in the last Lok Sabha elections.

In UP, BJP’s plight was caused by SP, not Congress

SP with 37 seats in Uttar Pradesh, Thackeray and Pawar with nine and eight seats respectively in Maharashtra and Mamata Banerjee with 29 seats in West Bengal gave a big blow to BJP. Thackeray and Pawar lost their election symbol and recognition after the split in their parties in Maharashtra and Mamata’s excellent performance in West Bengal despite the Sandeshkhali incident and allegations of scams was the reason for enthusiasm in the opposition camp including Congress.

In Maharashtra too, the Congress boat sailed through with the help of allies

In Maharashtra, the Congress also has 13 seats because it contested more seats but did not have local leaders like Pawar and Thackeray. In Bengal, the Congress got one seat fighting both Trinamool and BJP. There the Congress contested the elections with the Left parties but could not get a single seat. The Left and the Congress had a rivalry in Kerala and both contested separately. In comparison, in all the three Congress-ruled states of Karnataka, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh, the party could not win seats in the assembly elections and lost to the BJP.

In the states where Congress is in power, BJP is doing great

In Karnataka, the Congress managed to win only nine seats against the BJP’s 17, dashing the Opposition’s hopes that the saffron party would slip far below its 2019 tally of 25. In Telangana too, the Congress is in power, but the BJP equalled it with eight seats. In Himachal, the Congress party was wiped out, with the BJP winning all four seats. In other direct contests between the Congress and the BJP, barring a marginal improvement in Haryana (5-5) and Rajasthan (8-14), the Congress failed to defeat the BJP in Madhya Pradesh (0-29), Gujarat (1-25), Jharkhand (2-8). In Jharkhand, Congress ally JMM won three seats. The Congress continued to lag behind the BJP in Chhattisgarh (1-10), Uttarakhand (0-5), Assam (3-9), Arunachal Pradesh (0-2) and Jammu (0-2). The Congress tied 1-1 with the BJP in Goa and defeated the BJP 2-0 in Manipur.

Even today BJP is ahead in direct fight

The BJP’s dominance in a direct fight with the Congress, despite the incumbent issue of 10 years of Modi rule, explains why the Congress was reduced to 99. This is the third time in a row that the Congress party has been reduced to less than 100 seats in Lok Sabha elections. It may be noted that the main focus of Rahul Gandhi’s two Bharat Jodo Yatras was to strengthen the Congress’ fight against the BJP in these regions, but the results show that this campaign did not work sufficiently. On the contrary, the Congress performed better than other parties in states where the BJP was weak. It won 14 seats in Kerala and seven in Punjab.

The goal of regaining ground from BJP is still far away

In Bihar and Delhi, the Congress and its allies (RJD and AAP) are fighting unitedly against the BJP. The Congress’s continued failure to regain ground from the BJP also explains the significant difference in the final score of 240-99 between the BJP and the Congress. Many opposition leaders believe that if the Congress had performed better against the BJP and shown the same influence as the regional giants in the India Alliance, they might have toppled the NDA this time.
