How many students are given Regents Scholarship?

Each year, Regents Scholarships are awarded to 75 students to study at UCLA. At present there are about 300 students in the university who are studying on this scholarship. The thing to note here is that the Regents Scholarship available at UCLA is valid only for this campus. Regents Scholarship is also given in other campuses of the University of California, but no student can transfer to UCLA after getting the scholarship there.

How is selection for Regents Scholarship done?

The Regents Scholars Selection Committee reviews the applications of first-year students each year. Selection for scholarship is done on the basis of the student’s admission application. To be eligible for this scholarship, students have to fulfill certain conditions, which are as follows:

  • American citizen
  • Permanent resident (a person who has obtained a green card)
  • Nonresident student qualifying under California Assembly Bill 130 or 131

Students will have to fulfill these conditions

Regents Scholars are required to report any outside financial aid or scholarships to UCLA’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. They must also maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 throughout all quarters and enroll in a minimum of 12 units per quarter. Any change in academic status, such as enrolling in fewer than 12 units, having a grade below a 3.0 GPA, or being absent for an extended period of time must be reported to the Scholarship Coordinator. If this is not done, students will not be eligible for scholarship.

What are the benefits of the scholarship?

  • All Regents Scholars are entitled to an honorarium of $2,000 (Rs 1.6 lakh).
  • If any student needs more money than the $2,000 honorarium, UCLA is going to provide that to the scholars.
  • New scholars receive scholarships for four years (12 consecutive academic quarters).
  • Transfer students to UCLA receive scholarships for two years (6 consecutive academic quarters).
  • The scholarship does not apply to summer quarter.
