OpenAI confirms support for India’s AI missions




Open AI vice president Srinivasa Narayanan on Wednesday said his/her company, which runs ChatGPT, will support India’s AI missions and application development initiatives.

“Open AI is committed to supporting India in its AI mission and application development initiatives to ensure that Indian developers can build on our models and benefit society,” Narayanan said while addressing the Global India AI Summit in the national capital today.

The OpenAI executive urged the Union Ministry of Information and Technology to continue discussions on areas where the company can add value.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) hosted the two-day Global India AI Summit 2024 in the national capital.

Acknowledging the importance of the Indian market, Narayanan said the OpenAI leadership has kept the country at the top of its mind while formulating policies.

“As a leadership team, we are developing a habit of continuing to learn from India. We are keeping India in mind in every important decision we are taking,” the OpenAI vice president said.

Speaking about progress in the field of AI, he/she said that there has been tremendous progress in AI across the region in the last decade.

“We launched GPT just 1.5 years ago. We thought it would be a small research preview, but over the last 18 months, we have seen people using it in transformational ways, and it is impacting people’s daily lives, including here in India.”

Highlighting the widespread use of AI, he/she said that AI is being used in many industries across the world.

he/she said, “AI has added speed and dynamism to the already dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem in India. Entrepreneurs understand the market gaps. They are creating innovative products. We are reducing the cost of intelligence, enabling developers to write code and helping them build fully conversational and natural interfaces to computing.”

In his/her inaugural address during the same event, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the shared responsibility of working towards the safe use of AI.

OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence research organization founded in December 2015 and headquartered in San Francisco. Sam Altman is its chief executive officer.
