One country-one election, Waqf amendment bill, budget… this year there will be a fierce fight between the opposition and the opposition in the Parliament.

New Delhi: The year 2024 was full of turmoil for Parliament. Controversial bills, uproar and clashes between MPs made headlines. One Nation One Election Bill remained the biggest issue. All eyes will be on the future of this bill in 2025. That means, there is going to be a lot of uproar in the Parliament in the year 2025. The second budget of the central government will also be important. Questions were also raised on the functioning of the House. Due to heated arguments and uproar among the MPs, the proceedings had to be adjourned several times.

One country one election bill will be discussed

The first focus in the new year will be on the Union Budget. This will be the second budget of the third term of the Modi government, which is being seen as the NDA government. But the most discussed thing will be the 129th Constitution Amendment Bill. This bill proposes to hold Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously. Along with this, there is also a supplementary bill for Union Territories. The bill was introduced in the winter session and has been sent to the 39-member Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). This committee includes senior leaders of both the ruling party and the opposition.

Waqf amendment bill also with JPC

Another controversial law, the Waqf Amendment Bill, is also before the JPC. There has been a lot of uproar on this too. BJP does not have majority on its own and Congress has around 100 MPs. In such a situation, it remains to be seen how both the parties run the House. After ten years, he/she is the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha. It will be interesting to see how Rahul Gandhi coordinates with the opposition parties. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s entry into Parliament will also be discussed in political circles. Like the previous Lok Sabha, this time too there is no Deputy Speaker.

How much work was done in both the houses this year

According to PRS data, in 2024 the Lok Sabha ran for 211.67 hours instead of 241.58 hours. Rajya Sabha lasted for 160.92 hours instead of 218.83 hours. Historic bills like Waqf Amendment and One-Nation One-Election were introduced in 2024. Both were sent to JPC. The year ended with an uproar. There was a clash between MPs in the Parliament complex, in which some MPs were injured. The ruling party and the opposition filed police complaints against each other.

No-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Speaker

On December 10, a proposal was made to remove the Chairman of Rajya Sabha. This happened for the first time in the history of Rajya Sabha. The Deputy Chairman rejected it on procedural grounds. At the end of the year, amid the uproar over Adani and Sambhal issues, there was a good discussion on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution in both Houses. But in the last days, there was an uproar again over Home Minister Amit Shah’s comment on Baba Saheb Ambedkar. The opposition called it an insult to the creator of the Constitution. There was a scuffle between MPs in the Parliament complex, in which two BJP MPs were injured.

Speaker Om Birla made this appeal to the MPs

Speaker Om Birla said, ‘In 2025, MPs from all parties should work to increase the prestige of Parliament. I hope that they will behave in a disciplined manner while maintaining the dignity of the House. MPs should rise above party politics and focus on issues related to the public and live up to the expectations of the public.

‘Discussion should rise above party politics’

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh said, ‘From Assemblies to Parliament, MLAs of all parties should rise above party politics and discuss inclusive economic development and technological progress of the people. Whatever happened in Parliament in the last few days could have been completely avoided. I hope that in the coming days, MPs will rise above small political issues and work for a better future of the young generation.

‘Talks continue with the opposition and the House’

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal said, ‘We continued talks with the opposition for the smooth functioning of Parliament, but there was no consensus in the opposition. But later when the government exposed the opposition, especially Congress, on the Constitution and Dr. BR Ambedkar, they tried to divert it. In 2025, the government hopes that Parliament will function smoothly. We have no objection if the opposition wants to raise some issues, but it should be done as per the rules and procedures of Parliament.

Congress MP Manikam Tagore said, ‘There was a change in the attitude of the NDA government in the first session after the Lok Sabha elections. But after that, the ruling party started disrupting Parliament on non-issues. Many times the Lok Sabha was adjourned in less than two minutes. In 2025, the opposition will continue to work together and the Congress party believes in the smooth functioning of Parliament and is ready to cooperate with the government, but not use cheap tactics to stop the ruling party from raising public issues in Parliament. Should be adopted.
