One country one election… this is two-thirds majority, Congress cornered Modi government by showing voting results

New Delhi: At present, once again the discussion of ‘one country, one election’ is in full swing in the country. In the winter session of Parliament on Tuesday, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the 129th Constitution Amendment Bill for One Nation One Election on the floor of the Lok Sabha. After objections from many parties, voting was held to re-introduce the bill. The bill was introduced after more votes were cast. The Modi government is trying to conduct simultaneous Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections in the country, but the opposition is calling it an attack on the basic spirit of the Constitution. This bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha with a simple majority (269 MPs voted in favor and 198 in opposition) but gave rise to a new debate.

Where does the government have the numbers?

The opposition says that even though the bill has been introduced, it cannot be passed. Two-thirds majority is not in favor of the government. This step of the government is constitutionally weak and does not have public support. Congress MPs took a jibe at the government regarding the votes cast during voting. Congress MP Manikam Tagore shared the screenshot of e-voting on While the opposition got 198. The One Country-One Election proposal failed to gain two-thirds support.

Tharoor said- give up your stubbornness

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also pointed out the glaring difference in numbers. Speaking outside the media, he/she said that undoubtedly the government has greater numbers but to pass it (Constitution Amendment Bills) you need two-thirds majority which they clearly do not have. Therefore the government should not insist on this for long. As per rules, these amendments to the Constitution will require the support of two-thirds of the members present and voting to be passed by the Lok Sabha.

Congress gave example of voting result

Congress, using today’s example, pointed out that 461 members participated in the voting to introduce the Constitution Amendment Bill. If there was a vote to pass this bill, 307 of those 461 would have voted in favor but only 269 did so. This bill does not have support and many parties have spoken against it. Congress’s Manish Tewari, Samajwadi Party’s Dharmendra Yadav, Trinamool Congress’s Kalyan Banerjee and Tamil Nadu Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s TR Baalu led the protest.

Many parties including Congress expressed protest

The Shiv Sena faction of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party group, as well as several smaller parties, including the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Indian Union Muslim League, also protested. It is believed that the bill will probably be sent to the Joint Committee of Parliament (JPC). Which will be formed on the basis of numerical strength of each party in the Lok Sabha. This means that BJP will have the maximum members and will lead the committee.
