On not choosing Sarfaraz, Gavaskar said, you go to the fashion show and choose the model, also told the yo yo test ‘meaningless’

Don’t go by size and shape of cricketers but go by runs: Sunil Gavaskar.
Sarfaraz was not selected even after scoring consecutive runs in domestic cricket.

New Delhi. Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the BCCI selectors for repeatedly ignoring Sarfaraz Khan in the Test team. Sarfaraz has been scoring consistently well in domestic cricket for the past few years, but has not been able to get a Test call-up. The Mumbaikar has scored 12 centuries since 2020 including one triple and two double centuries. He scored 2441 runs in the last three domestic seasons, but the selectors have not selected him in the team even once.

Gavaskar criticized the selection policy, saying that if the selectors wanted someone thin, they should have chosen models from fashion shows. The veteran cricketer came in support of 25-year-old Sarfaraz and said that scoring a century is not easy for anyone if he is unfit. Sarfaraz has been hitting big hundreds in recent times to knock on the doors of the selectors.

Gavaskar said on Sports Today, “If you are unfit, you will not be able to score a century. That’s why cricket fitness is most important. I have no problem with whether you want to do the yo-yo test or whatever it is, but the yo-yo test cannot be the only criterion. You have to make sure that the person is fit for cricket as well. And if that person, whoever it is, is fit for cricket, then I don’t think it really matters.”

Mumbai’s star batsman Sarfaraz Khan has recently scored his third first class century against Delhi in this season of Ranji Trophy. He scored 125 runs in 155 balls, which included 16 fours and 4 sixes. Many fans and former cricketers were upset with the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee when Suryakumar Yadav was preferred over Sarfaraz Khan for the first two Tests against Australia.

Gavaskar said that irrespective of the size of the player, it is important to score runs and take wickets. Gavaskar said, “When he is scoring a century, he does not stay out of the field. He is back on the field again. All this tells you that the man is fit for cricket. If you are only looking for slim and trim guys, you can go to a fashion show and pick up a few models. Then give them a bat and ball and then involve them. You have cricketers of all shapes and sizes. Don’t go for size, go for runs and wickets.”
