Officials from many countries come to learn from us…Lok Sabha Speaker told how CAG strengthened its credibility

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has said that the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has played an important role in promoting accountability, transparency and good governance in the country. Appreciating the important role played by CAG in independent India, Birla said it has adapted itself to meet challenges during its rich legacy of 161 years. CAG has not only made changes in its audit systems but has also introduced new innovations. These have ensured credibility and authenticity in its work.

Contribution to the effective functioning of democracy

Addressing an event organized in Delhi on the occasion of the fourth Audit Day, Birla also mentioned that Members of Parliament discuss each paragraph of the audit report. They scrutinize it to ensure that public money is spent judiciously. he/she said that audit of government performance makes the executive accountable to the public. Strong financial discipline is the foundation of a strong democracy and CAG is making a significant contribution in this direction to ensure the effective functioning of our democracy.

Officers from outside come to learn from India

Birla said that officials from many countries of the world come to India to study and learn from India’s audit system. Through the efforts of the Parliamentary Democracy Research and Training Institute (PRIDE) of the Lok Sabha Secretariat, officials from more than 50 countries have participated in PRIDE programs for deep study of India’s audit systems. The Comptroller and Auditor General is leading the world with technology and innovations.

Financial transparency and discipline

Regarding the role of parliamentary committees, especially the Public Accounts Committee, the Lok Sabha Speaker said that MPs discuss audit reports closely in parliamentary committees. These discussions have played an important role in ensuring financial transparency and discipline. he/she also highlighted the parliamentary tradition of nominating a senior member of the opposition as the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee and said that such traditions are the strength of Indian democracy, as they ensure that our audit system remains impartial and transparent.

Expansion of scope of audit

Earlier, audit was considered only as criticism, but now its scope has expanded, he/she said. Wherever audit systems have been strengthened and accountable, financial discipline and transparency have been observed. In changing times, new technologies like Artificial Intelligence are being adopted to make our systems even more powerful and effective. he/she expressed hope that in the future, CAG will continue to play an important role in guiding the departments and other institutions of the country to increase their efficiency.
