New Delhi: According to a report published by a non-governmental organization called Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), the number of nuclear weapons that can be deployed by governments has reached a total of 9,576 by the beginning of 2023, up from 9,440 last year.

The Nuclear Weapons Ban Monitor report states that weaponized nuclear power is equivalent to ‘the collective destructive power of more than 135,000 Hiroshima bombs’.

The issue of nuclear weapons has become one of the most prominent since the end of the Cold War due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and subsequent aggressive rhetoric, as well as fears over Iran’s nuclear program and new missile tests by North Korea.

Weapon manufacturing is a ‘worrying trend’.

It has been told in the report that the total number of weapons has decreased, because America and Russia destroy some of their old weapons every year.

However, Greeth Ostern of Norwegian People’s Aid warned that new weapons production could soon outnumber old ones being scrapped.

he/she said, ‘This increase is worrying and continues a trend that started in 2017. If this does not stop, we will soon see an increase in the total number of nuclear weapons in the world for the first time since the Cold War.

According to Hans M. Christensen, director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists and contributor to the Nuclear Weapons Ban Monitor, some five countries are responsible for the increase in ready-to-use weapons.

“Russia, China, India, North Korea and Pakistan continued to expand their stockpiles in 2022, increasing the total global number of stockpiles available for use by the military by 136 weapons,” Christensen said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently escalated nuclear tensions by announcing the deployment of so-called ‘strategic’ nuclear weapons in Belarus on the EU border.

he/she justified the move by pointing to the presence of US nuclear weapons over the years in various countries close to Russia, including Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.

Russia has the world’s largest nuclear weapons stockpile.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, the total number of nuclear warheads peaked at 70,000 in 1986 at the height of tensions between the US and the Soviet Union.

In 2023, this number was reduced to 12,512, but still it is enough to wipe out life on earth.

Henriette Vestrin, secretary general of Norwegian People’s Aid, said, ‘The Ukraine crisis has shown that nuclear weapons do not create peace and stability. They do not deter aggression, but enable conventional wars and encourage risk-taking, which could lead to nuclear war.
