Now CBI will investigate the irregularities in NEET exam, a big decision of the government after the uproar across the country

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing controversy in the NEET (UG) paper leak case, the Ministry of Education has taken a big decision. The ministry has handed over the case of alleged irregularities in the NEET (UG) exam 2024 to the CBI for a comprehensive investigation. Earlier, the investigation of the UGC-NET exam was handed over to the CBI.

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court demanding a CBI inquiry

According to the information, the students had filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding a CBI and ED investigation. In the petition filed on behalf of 10 students who appeared in this exam, Bihar Police has been requested to expedite the investigation of the case and direct them to file a report before the Supreme Court. The petition states that the petitioners are fully aware of the consequences of cancellation of the exam, but they have no other option.

What is in the petition filed in the Supreme Court?

According to the petition, ‘There were several other irregularities in the NEET-UG examination of the year 2024, especially the gross negligence on the part of the authorities in providing question papers to the candidates on time.’ The petition states, ‘In some places, wrong set of question papers were distributed and later asked back.’

The court sought a response from NTA

The Supreme Court had earlier sought responses from the Centre, National Testing Agency (NTA) and others on several petitions, including those seeking cancellation of NEET-UG 2024 exam and court-monitored probe, amid growing outrage over alleged irregularities in conducting the NEET exam. The apex court had also stayed further proceedings on similar petitions pending in various high courts. However, the court had made it clear that it would not stay the counselling process.

The exam was held on May 5 at 4,750 centres and around 24 lakh candidates appeared for it. The exam results were expected to be declared on June 14, but were announced ahead of schedule on June 4 as the evaluation of answer sheets was completed earlier. Allegations of irregularities led to protests in several cities and a blame game between rival political parties.
