The reason behind why Pakistan celebrates its Independence Day on 14 August is attributed to British Viceroy Lord Mountbatten. It is said that Mountbatten had decided 15 August 1947 as the date for the independence of both the countries, but he/she himself went to Karachi on 14 August 1947 to hand over the declaration of Pakistan’s independence to Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

According to a different theory, August is considered the religious month of Ramzan in the Muslim community. The midnight of 14th and 15th August coincides with the 27th day of Ramzan. Therefore, Independence Day started being celebrated on 14th August instead of 15th.

Pakistan’s standard time is 30 minutes behind India’s standard time. While India became an independent country at 00:00, it was 11:30 in Pakistan at that time. Apart from this, the Prime Minister and President of Pakistan address the country through live telecast.
