No information was given to India… What else did the Ministry of External Affairs say on the Adani case?

New Delhi: The Foreign Ministry’s statement has come out on the allegations of bribery and fraud leveled against industrialist Gautam Adani by US prosecutors. The Foreign Ministry said on Friday that this is a legal matter involving private companies, some individuals and the US Justice Department. The Government of India was not informed about this issue in advance.

‘This is a matter related to private companies and people’

“This is a legal matter involving private companies and individuals and the US Justice Department,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. There are established procedures and legal methods in such cases, we believe they will be followed. Jaiswal was answering a question during the press conference on the allegations made against Adani and others.

Did America send summons in Adani case?

On a question whether the US has sent any summons or warrant on the Adani case, he/she said India has not received any such request. “Any request made by a foreign government for execution of a summons or arrest warrant is part of mutual legal assistance,” Jaiswal said. Such requests are examined on merits.

‘Government of India is not legally involved’

he/she said, ‘We have not received any request from America in this matter.’ he/she clarified that this matter pertains to private individuals and private institutions. The Government of India is not legally involved in this at present.

Let us tell you that last week the US Justice Department had leveled criminal charges against Adani and others. They are accused of paying a bribe of $250 million to Indian officials to get solar energy contracts and lying about it to raise money from investors in the US.
