The National Medical Commission (NMC) has expressed serious concern over incidents of ragging following the recent death of an 18-year-old MBBS student at GMERS Medical College in Gujarat. UGC’s anti-ragging helpline was also informed about this incident. This highlights the need for strict anti-ragging reforms for the safety of students. According to officials, NMC has been receiving many complaints of ragging related to graduation and post graduation i.e. MBBS, MD, MS students. These include cases of mental harassment and even suicide. These complaints are being received through NMC’s Anti Ragging Cell, UGC Helpline and social media. Complaints include ill-treatment, molestation, coercion and non-compliance with rules. The National Medical Commission (NMC) is in constant touch with medical institutions through video conferencing.

NMC anti ragging rules

The National Medical Commission has issued rules to prevent ragging in medical colleges in 2021. Under these rules, it is the responsibility of the institutions to take special measures to prevent ragging. However, officials said that during this time it was observed that no special arrangements have been made to stop ragging on the campus. There was also a shortage of CCTV cameras. Apart from this, even annual reports are not submitted by medical colleges, due to which incidents of ragging are increasing.

Therefore, NMC orders all medical colleges to implement anti-ragging mechanisms and form anti-ragging squads as per the 2021 rules. Along with this, faculty, staff and students should be made aware. Annual report should also be submitted on time. If the rules are not followed, strict action will be taken against the medical college.

Some time ago a new session has started in medical colleges. now once again Well The time for admission to new courses like MBBS, MD/MS through examination is approaching. If seen, medical colleges need to remain strict and alert regarding the rules of ragging throughout the year.
