New Delhi: No one would have thought that the Yamuna river, which remains dry in Delhi on normal days, can also cause floods in the country’s capital. It rained for 3 days in Delhi and the water level of Yamuna came much above the danger mark. Flood water entered many areas. Delhi, which had the pride of being the country’s capital and developed, has been exposed openly in front of everyone. People are being continuously evacuated from low-lying areas. However, a senior Central Water Commission (CWC) official said on Thursday that the water level of the Yamuna river in Delhi has stabilized and will start receding from tonight.

According to the flood monitoring portal of the CWC, the water level at the old railway bridge, which had risen to 208.62 meters at 1 pm, remained stable till 4 pm. “The water level in the Yamuna has stabilized and will start receding in the next four hours. It is expected to recede to 208.45 meters by 3 am on Friday,” Sharad Chandra, director of the Central Water Commission (CWC), said. he/she said that the water flow rate at Hathinikund barrage in Haryana dropped to 80,000 cusecs at 4 pm. After the Yamuna came in spate in Delhi, many areas got submerged.

Due to rise in water level in Yamuna, public and private infrastructure including road and rail traffic has been affected and people living along the river have faced immense difficulties. The water level of the river at the old railway bridge crossed the 208-metre mark on Wednesday night, prompting the CWC to describe it as a “peak situation”. Following a sharp rise in the Yamuna’s water level, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday urged the central government to intervene. At the same time, the Delhi Police had imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in the flood-affected areas of the national capital.
