Kathmandu: Charles Sobhraj, the French son of Indian and Vietnamese parents, will have to spend another day in jail in Nepal after immigration officials have expressed their inability to arrange accommodation for the notorious serial killer. Sobhraj is likely to be extradited after his release from jail as per the Supreme Court order. A joint bench of Justice Sapna Pradhan Malla and Justice Tilak Prasad Shrestha on Wednesday ordered the release of 78-year-old Sobhraj from jail.
Because of this delay in the release of Charles SobhrajSobhraj’s lawyer Gopal Shivkoti Chintan said though all the formalities for his release from jail have been completed, he has to be handed over to the immigration department. Immigration officials have asked to postpone his release from jail till Friday as they (officials) have to make arrangements for him (Shobhraj) to stay.
Sobhraj is serving sentence in Nepali jail since 2003
Known as The Bikini Killer and The Serpent, Sobhraj was serving a life sentence in a Kathmandu jail since 2003 for the murder of American woman Connie Jo Bronjich in Nepal in 1975. At the same time, in 2014, Sobhraj was convicted for the murder of Canadian citizen Lauren Carey and sentenced to life imprisonment for the second time. Life imprisonment in Nepal usually means 20 years of imprisonment.
To which country will Charles Sobhraj be sent?
Charles Sobhraj holds French citizenship. In such a situation, there is a high possibility that he can be sent to France after his release from Nepal’s jail. For this, the Nepalese authorities have also approached the French government. France has also agreed to take back its citizen. There is no case registered against Sobhraj in France. In such a situation, after leaving Nepal, he can be kept at a safe place of the French government.
