New York and dinner invitation…Tharoor and Hardeep Puri clashed over which old X post of 2009 regarding Soros

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party often targets American billionaire George Soros and his/her ties to the Congress. This time Congress has targeted BJP in the name of Soros. MP Shashi Tharoor accused Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri that he/she had met George Soros in New York. Tharoor alleges that Soros had also invited Hardeep Puri for dinner. Now the Modi government minister has responded to the allegations against him/her. Responding to Tharoor, Puri said that it was Tharoor who had invited Soros for dinner. The post of a BJP leader is behind the exchange of words between Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and Union Minister Hardeep Puri. This whole matter started on 15th December. A BJP worker from Karnataka showed an old post of Tharoor from 2009. In this post, Tharoor had written that he/she met old friend George Soros. he/she is optimistic about India and eager to learn about our neighbourhood. he/she is more than just an investor. While reposting that post, the BJP worker asked, what do you think about this X-post, Tharoor?

And then the X war started between Tharoor and Puri.
This tweet by Shashi Tharoor is almost 15 years old. After this tweet he/she met Soros only once. This meeting took place at Hardeep Puri’s house. Puri was India’s ambassador to America at that time and is now a BJP minister. Puri had invited some American celebrities to dine with him/her. At that time Tharoor was the Minister of State for External Affairs. Since then he/she has had no contact with Soros. his/her old relations had no political meaning.

Tharoor further said that my old relationship never had any political meaning. I hope this will clarify the matter for those who are making absurd allegations regarding my 15 year old post. he/she further said that I know how the troll factory works and I am sure these people will not understand.

Hardeep Puri’s answer
Union Minister Hardeep Puri has also responded to Tharoor. Responding to Shashi Tharoor’s words, Puri said that my friend Dr. Shashi Tharoor, who was a student at St. Stephen’s College of DU. I was then a member of the teaching faculty. I arrived in New York as Minister of State for External Affairs shortly after my appointment as India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations. I hosted him/her and his/her colleagues at a briefing breakfast on 11 October 2009 and again at a dinner on the evening of 12 October 2009.

Puri further said that since I was in the city for only a few months, but Dr. Tharoor had spent a lot of time in New York, I did not choose the list of people invited for the dinner. This was given to me by Minister Tharoor. Apart from members of the diplomatic fraternity I saw the name of George Soros in the list and I clearly remember the then minister meeting him/her in May 2009 and even tweeting about it. This is the only time in my life I met Soros.

Puri further said that when Dr. Tharoor tweeted about the dinner, I called him/her on December 15 to remind him/her of the context. Usually he/she is in a hurry, but this time he/she did not answer my call. Puri alleged that in retrospect, it is clear that Soros’ name was included because he/she was among the beneficiaries of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and Minister of State Shashi Tharoor was keen to meet him/her.
