Nepal Poll: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba’s Nepali Congress becomes the largest party, wins 57 seats, can form government again


Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba’s Nepali Congress has emerged as the single largest party in Nepal’s parliamentary elections by winning 57 seats and is likely to form the government. The counting of votes for the parliamentary elections under direct voting ended here on Monday. To end the political instability in Nepal, elections for the House of Representatives and seven provincial assemblies were held on 20 November and the counting of votes began a day later.

In Nepal’s 275-member House of Representatives, 165 members will be elected through direct voting, while the remaining 110 will be elected through a proportional election system. According to the Election Commission of Nepal, the Nepali Congress has won 57 seats in the House of Representatives under direct elections, while the CPN-UML has won 44 seats so far. The CPN-Maoist Center won 18 seats in the direct elections, while the CPN-Unified Socialist won 10.

Independents won five seats
Similarly, Rashtriya Swatantra Party, Rashtriya Prajatantra Party and Janata Samajwadi Party have won seven seats each. Similarly, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party and Civil Liberation Party have won four and three seats respectively. Rashtriya Jan Morcha, Nepali Workers and Peasants Party and Janmat Party have won one seat each. Independent candidates have got five seats.

Nepali Congress wins 89 seats in the House of Representatives
Election Commission spokesman Shaligram Paudyal said that till now the counting of votes in 165 constituencies of the House of Representatives has been completed and only two seats are yet to be counted. The counting of votes is still underway in two seats under the proportional voting system, the official said. The Nepali Congress emerged as the largest party in the House of Representatives with 89 seats, while the CPN-UML won 77 seats. In third place is the CPN-Maoist Center which had to be content with 32 seats, while the RSP may finish fourth with 21 seats.
