NEET Success Story: Studying till 12 pm and then from 3 am, this is how a Kashmiri daily wage laborer passed the NEET exam


Kashmir Daily wage earner Umar Ahmad Ghani Success in NEET: Pulwama district of Kashmir, which often remains in the headlines due to encounters between the army and terrorists, has often reported attacks, firing and terror. 19-year-old Umar Ahmed Ghani from Jagigam, a small village in this district, set an example by passing the NEET UG exam of the year 2023. NEET UG is one of the toughest medical entrance exams in India. Umar passed this exam by securing 601 marks out of 720. his/her achievement is the result of his/her hard work and dedication, especially when he/she comes from a very weak family financially. Umar’s father is a laborer and his/her mother does housework.

Umar used to study every day from 4 pm to 12 pm and then from 3 am to 8 am. he/she used to study at such odd hours not because it was his/her routine but because he/she had to go to school and do labour work during the day. Despite this, he/she cleared NEET 2023.

Umar says, ‘My family is not financially strong. I had to work as a daily wage laborer along with going to school. When I was in class IX, my father was more than 50 years old, so I had to work hard to support my family financially. In class ten, I heard the news of a boy from my district becoming a doctor by passing the NEET exam. This inspired me to prepare for this entrance exam and I chose science stream in class XI.’

19-year-old Umar said that when he/she was in class 10, he/she was inspired by the news of a boy from Pulwama district clearing the NEET exam and becoming a doctor. he/she says, ‘his/her story inspired me to prepare for NEET and I decided to choose science stream in class 11.’

Due to financial constraints, Umar’s family could not afford private coaching. But this promising child did not give up and focused on self-study with NCERT books. To buy study material and support his/her family, he/she also used to do painting work in houses.

Just as he/she started preparing for NEET, COVID hit the whole world. Several other problems made his/her studies difficult.

Umar says, ‘Covid did not scare or discourage me. I saw the efforts being made by medical professionals around me and around the world. This motivated me even more to pass the NEET exam and become a doctor to help people.’

The same pandemic that many found challenging, gave Umar a golden opportunity to achieve his/her goal.

On the story of his/her success and struggle, Umar had said, ‘Many times the internet was shut down or there was a lockdown in the district. But since I was studying from NCERT books, my study plan was not affected.’

Advising candidates who come from financially weak backgrounds, Umar believes that they should not worry and focus on hard work, which is the key to success in any field.

Umar, who passed the NEET exam in the year 2023, wants to take admission in any government medical college in Jammu and Kashmir after completing his/her MBBS. he/she insists that he/she wants to practice only in his/her home state of Kashmir.
