NEET 2024 Result Toppers: One question changed the entire merit list, NEET toppers reduced three times

NEET UG New Revised Merit Topper List: NTA is going to release the revised merit list of NEET-UG exam soon. In this, the number of toppers will decrease from 61 to 17, which is more than a 3-fold drop. This change is being made after IIT-Delhi reviewed the answer of a Physics question on the instructions of the Supreme Court. IIT-Delhi found that only one option of the question was correct, whereas earlier NTA had considered two options correct. This news is very important for the 4.2 lakh students who took this exam, as this will affect their ranking.

The matter arose when several students complained that two different answers were given in different NCERT books for a Physics question. Following this, the Supreme Court directed IIT-Delhi to investigate the matter on a petition. IIT-Delhi in its investigation found that only one option for the controversial question was correct.

Impact on admission of 16 thousand NEET students:

Earlier, NTA had given marks to the students considering both the options as correct. But now after the report of IIT-Delhi, NTA is forced to change its merit list. Five marks will be deducted from the students who had chosen the wrong option. Four marks for the correct answer and one mark as negative marking.

This will affect the students who have secured ranks between 50,000 and 1 lakh the most. It is estimated that around 16,000 students will not be able to get admission in medical college due to this change.

An NTA official said, ‘While 61 students had topped earlier, now after the deduction of marks, only 17 students will remain toppers. After the deduction of marks, the number of toppers will decrease from 61 to 17. However, the 44 students who had earlier scored 720 out of 720 will see only a slight difference in their rank.’
