When a NEET student who scored 711 marks filed a petition challenging this physics question, the whole matter came to light. Know what was that question and what did the Supreme Court say on it?

Petition of student who got 711 marks in NEET:

The Supreme Court on Monday asked IIT Delhi to form a committee of experts to give its opinion on the correct answer to a controversial question in the NEET-UG exam. The court has asked the committee to submit its report by Tuesday afternoon. During the hearing of the NEET-UG exam held on May 5, a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud heard the counsel for a petitioner who scored 711 marks challenging a question in the exam which had ambiguous options.

According to the petitioner, option number 4 was the correct answer for this question from Physics as per the updated edition of NCERT. However, students who opted for option number 2 were also given grace marks as it was correct as per the previous editions of NCERT. The petitioner, through his/her counsel, said he/she did not attempt the question to avoid negative marking but the National Testing Agency, which conducted the exam, awarded full marks to candidates who opted for either of the two options.

What is that question? (NEET Controversial Ambiguous Physics Question)

We are talking about the physics question on atom, which was question number 23 in set T3, question number 25 in set T1, question number 20 in set S1, question number 12 in set R1 and question number 24 in set R3.

Question: Given below are two statements-
Statement 1 –
Atoms are electrically neutral because they have equal positive and negative charges.
Statement 2 – The atoms of each element are stable and emit their own characteristic spectrum.
According to the statements given above choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.
Option 1: Statement 1 is correct but Statement 2 is incorrect
Option 2: Statement 1 is incorrect but Statement 2 is correct
Option 3: Both Statement 1 and Statement 2 are correct
Option 4: Both Statement 1 and Statement 2 are incorrect

answer – According to the new NCERT edition, option 4 is the correct answer and according to the old NCERT, option 2 is the correct answer.

Supreme Court asked SG the reason:

On the controversy over the question, the Chief Justice said, “There are instructions to follow the latest NCERT version. According to the latest NCERT version, option 4 is the correct answer. So those who answered option 2 cannot be given full marks.” The Chief Justice also asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the NTA, why the testing panel decided to give marks to candidates who chose either of the two options.

Taking care of poor children who study from the books of their elder siblings:

Responding to the matter, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that while students have to follow the new edition of NCERT, the government has received representations from many poor students who said they have used NCERT books of their elder siblings for studies.

NTA is going against its own rules

The Chief Justice said, ‘By giving marks to option 2, you are going against your own rule that the old version cannot be followed.’ The Chief Justice also took note of the lawyer’s argument that more than four lakh students benefited by choosing option 2 of the question.

The entire NEET result can change once again:

Students who chose any of the two options in the question have got 4 marks and if the Supreme Court orders any change in it, then once again the entire NEET result and rank can change because every single mark is very important in competitive exams.
