Tyagi’s statement put the alliance in trouble
Sources say that Tyagi’s resignation has come at a time when he/she had recently taken an aggressive stand on some ideological issues of the BJP. Sources said that these statements on some sensitive issues put the party in a difficult situation within the NDA. A senior JDU leader said that he/she is a very respected leader of the party, but he/she had started making statements without asking the high command about the party line on issues. There are very sensitive issues like lateral entry and UCC. Harsh statements made without knowing the views of the party leadership can create problems in the alliance.
When a joint statement was given with the opposition
Apart from this, Tyagi had recently issued a joint statement with opposition leaders on the Israel-Hamas war. he/she said that on foreign policy issues, it is a rule to go along with the government as allies. These are matters of national security and the central government takes a stand after considering a lot of factors. This should not be our concern at all. But you are organizing a meal with opposition leaders on the Israel-Palestine conflict. That is also fine, as long as it is done in a personal capacity. But you are issuing a joint statement with the opposition. After the meeting, a joint statement was issued urging India to stop the sale of weapons to Israel. It was signed by Tyagi, Ali and MPs and leaders of Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Statement was also given on lateral entry
However, the party functionary said there was no pressure from the BJP and the decision was taken by Nitish Kumar himself. Only 10 days ago, when Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan expressed his/her doubts about a UPSC advertisement seeking applications for appointments to top government posts through lateral entry, he/she said his/her party was not in favour of the move at all. Tyagi went a step further and said the government has given a weapon in the hands of the opposition and the move will make Rahul Gandhi a champion of the underprivileged classes.
While Tyagi clarified the party’s stand on the matter, he/she said JDU sees itself as an advocate of caste census and reservation for Dalits and backward classes. his/her words were seen as a bit harsh for an ally. The government was forced to withdraw the advertisement, which Tyagi described as a victory of the politics of social justice led by Nitish Kumar.
This statement was also given regarding UCC
These statements come at a time when the JDU is trying to establish itself as a key ally of the BJP in that government. The party is trying to become a reliable alliance partner to gain maximum central benefits for Bihar ahead of the 2025 assembly elections. Earlier on issues like the UCC, Tyagi has articulated the JDU’s more clear stand than other allies. On August 15, when the Prime Minister once again raised the issue of UCC, Tyagi said the party supports the UCC but wants wider consultation. he/she said this was a stand made clear by Nitish Kumar himself in his/her letter to the Law Commission in 2017. The LJP, on the other hand, said it would comment only after the government drafts the UCC.
On wrestler Vinesh Phogat missing out on an Olympic medal, Tyagi said he/she suspected manipulation as part of a conspiracy. This was echoed by former Haryana CM and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
Soon after the Lok Sabha election results, when talks were going on between NDA allies, Tyagi put forth JDU’s stand on the demand for special status for Bihar and the problems of the Agneepath scheme. Tyagi said that there is anger among the voters about the scheme. Our party wants that it should be discussed in depth in the government to remove its flaws. Although our support to the NDA is unconditional, we believe that Bihar should get special status. After the division of the state, the difficulties and unemployment problems faced can be overcome only by giving special status to the state.
