Navy gets ‘Director’… will show the way in the sea, his/her specialties are shocking

New Delhi: The ‘Director’ was inducted into the Indian Navy at a ceremony held in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday. ‘Director’ is the second vessel of the Survey Vessel (Large) project, built with more than 80% indigenous content at GRSE, Kolkata. It reflects India’s expertise in ship design and construction and commitment towards naval self-reliance. ‘Director’ has a maximum speed of more than 18 knots and can remain at sea for 25 continuous days. This is a hydrographic survey vessel (ship) which will survey the bottom of the sea and create navigation charts. Warships and cargo ships of all the countries of the world pass through the Indian Ocean region only through the hydrography charts made by India. Only India has this technology in the Indian Ocean region.

Navigation charts are necessary because the surface in the ocean is not uniform. At some places it is deeper and at other places it is less. Hydrographic map ensures that any ship navigates the right path in the ocean and no accident occurs. The Director will use new satellite-based navigation and communication systems, as well as state-of-the-art sensors to map and chart the ocean’s depths and terrain with high precision. That’s why the director has been named ‘Path Pradarshak’ of the sea.

What is the speciality?

The Director is 110 meters long and weighs approximately 3,800 tonnes. It has two diesel engines. This ship will play an important role in increasing India’s maritime power as well as mapping the country’s maritime area. Navy spokesperson Captain Vivek Madhwal said that this vessel reflects India’s commitment towards self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The vessel is the reincarnation of the first ‘Director’, which served in the Indian Navy for 32 years and was decommissioned in 2014. The new vessel honors this heritage. The commissioning of ‘Director’ is a significant step in the modernization of the Indian Navy’s hydrographic fleet and strengthens the country’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) approach.
