The arrival of the Mumbai Monsoon 2025 is now clearly visible, with signs of change already affecting the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the next 48 hours for Mumbai and surrounding areas. The warning includes the possibility of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
Pre-Monsoon Showers Cool Down Mumbai and Konkan
Even before the official start of the monsoon, pre-monsoon rains have begun in parts of Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad. These showers have brought relief from the heat and created pleasant weather across the region. IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in the next two days.
Wind speeds may reach 30 to 40 km/h, so residents are advised to take precautions.
Falling Temperatures and Cool Monsoon Breeze
Due to the rain, day temperatures are expected to drop, and the maximum temperature may stay around 31°C. Interestingly, this year has already recorded more rainfall in May compared to last year. In May 2024, Mumbai received 21.3 mm of rain, while in May 2023, it was only 3.4 mm. This shows that the monsoon could arrive on time and remain active this year.
10 May, Nowcast warning at 2200 Hrs: Light spells of rain very likely to occur at isol places in districts of #Hingoli, #Nanded & #Nashik during next 3-4 hrs. Possibility of thunder/lightning with gusty winds in some areas. Take precautions while moving out.

Why Is the Weather Changing So Rapidly?
Meteorologists have explained that a strong western disturbance is currently affecting parts of Gujarat and North Konkan. This system is likely to stay for 3 to 4 more days. It is pulling moisture from the Arabian Sea, which is causing early thunderstorms and heavy showers even before the monsoon’s official arrival.
When Will the Monsoon Officially Reach Mumbai?
According to IMD, the Mumbai Monsoon 2025 may begin in the first week of June. Normally, the monsoon enters Kerala on June 1, and then reaches Mumbai within 7 to 8 days. The good news is that this year’s monsoon may not be affected by El Niño, which means above-average rainfall is expected.
Mumbai Rainfall Stats: A Quick Look
Year | Rainfall in May (mm) |
---|---|
2000 | 388 mm (Record high) |
2023 | 3.4 mm |
2024 | 21.3 mm |

The weather in Mumbai is already cool and refreshing, but there is a strong chance of heavy rainfall and storms over the next few days. People should take the IMD warnings seriously to avoid any inconvenience or danger.
