Mughals had built a permanent inn in Prayagraj, today there is a market there for making wooden and iron products.

Prayagraj has always been on top because of its religious importance, but the historical importance of this city is also no less than any other. From the Mughal rule in the medieval period to the modern British rule, this place had its own importance. During the Mughal rule, along with the construction of a fort on the banks of Yamuna, ramparts were constructed around the city for security.

Many inns were also built here, in which soldiers as well as travelers stayed. There used to be a permanent inn at the western end of the city, which later came to be known as Sarai Khuldabad. There used to be big doors at all four corners for entry into the inn, which gradually fell down with time. Let us tell you, the area where there used to be inns became the economic area of the city. There is a vegetable market nearby, which deals extensively in iron and wood. Even in Khuldabad area of Prayagraj, the pucca sarai was spread over an area of 17 bighas. Apart from the permanent rooms to accommodate the soldiers and travelers coming to the inn, there were four big doors at the four corners of the inn. It is said that in medieval India, there is mention of construction of inns on the roadside from Sher Shah Suri to Mughal rulers.

It is said that the inns were mainly used for the soldiers. During that time, soldiers used to move on horses, who needed food and water along with rest. In such a situation, inns were built at some distance. Let us tell you, there were better arrangements for the travelers to stay in these inns.

It is said that along with the concrete inn, other entry doors had already been broken in the cycle of time. There were domes and umbrellas along with windows above this door. There used to be a post office and a military post nearby. The doors were closed in the evening. At that time it used to be a historical heritage, but not anymore.

One door of the inn was near the gate of Khuldabad vegetable market of Khusrobagh, below which was the old GT Road, which passes through Bairahna locality and joins the new GT Road near Chowfatka, which further goes towards Kanpur. Along with the historic Khusrobagh, near Pakki Sarai, there is also the city’s oldest vegetable market, Khuldabad, and the Unani Medical College. A market for products made of wood and iron can also be seen here.

The large door of the inn made of stones and lakhori brick was demolished by the Prayagraj Development Authority in the year 2018. The reason behind the demolition of the historical heritage was the dilapidation of the door and apart from the safety of the citizens, widening of the road was also a reason.
