Mufasa – The Lion King Review: Shahrukh Khan roars as the spirit of the jungle king, the film is a visual treat.

A big forest, where there were many animals and birds and the king of the forest, the lion. Such stories are a part of every child’s childhood. Every child has been listening to the stories of the jungle and the lion from his/her grandparents with interest. This is the reason why Disney’s 1994 animated musical drama film ‘The Lion King’ has been a favorite of the children of the nineties. Whereas, in 2019, its reboot version was in the news in India due to the juxtaposition of the voices of Shahrukh Khan and his/her son Aryan Khan. Now the prequel of this classic film ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ is hitting the screens. This is the story of a promising lion separated from his/her parents who becomes Mufasa, the great king of the jungle.

Based on the theme of meeting and separation, which was once Bollywood’s favorite, this film reminds the films of Manmohan Desai and BR Chopra, in which emotion, drama, comedy, romance, action, all the essences are present.

Story of ‘Mufasa – The Lion King’

The story begins with Simba waiting for a new member in his/her family. Meanwhile, Rafiki tells Simba’s daughter Kiara the story of her grandfather Mufasa becoming ‘The Lion King’ and how Mufasa, who lost his/her parents in a flood, forgets to swim out of fear. Then another lion named Taka takes his/her hand, saves him/her and gives him/her his/her brother’s place despite his/her father’s objections. However, when the lions of the outsider tribe attack them, Mufasa becomes their messiah instead of the future king Taka, causing Taka’s parents to entrust Mufasa with the responsibility of protecting him/her and send the two away.

Now both move forward in the hope of finding a safe place. On the way, they meet Sarabi, a female lioness, whom Taka falls in love with. Taka learns the tricks of impressing Sarabi from Mufasa, but soon Sarabi realizes that his/her hero is not Taka, but Mufasa and this love triangle becomes the reason for the hostility between the brothers Mufasa and Taka.

Further into the story, how does the betrayed Taka take revenge and how does Taka become Scar? How does Mufasa face the outside lions? How to become the king of the jungle? You will know all this after watching the film.

‘Mufasa – The Lion King’ Movie Review

If seen, this story written by Jeff Nathanson is simple like all Bollywood films, in which there are visible emotions like grief of losing parents, love triangle, betrayal and revenge, but the director who has won an Oscar for ‘Moonlight’ Barry Jenkins has created this world of the jungle on screen with such grandeur and beauty that you get lost in it.

Through his/her long shots, Barrie gives the audience a visual treat to remember. On top of that, the forest and its animals come to life thanks to stunning animation and James Laxton’s excellent cinematography.

In the Hindi version, the voice of King Khan Shahrukh has given soul to King Mufasa. Shahrukh’s voice works wonders in romantic and emotional scenes. Miang Chang who became the voice of Taka and Makrand Deshpande who gave the voice of Rafiki have also done a good job. Sanjay Mishra and Shreyas Talpade’s pair of Pumbaa and Timon have not got much footage this time.

Similarly, Aryan Khan and Abram Khan have also had very few dialogues. One weakness of the film is its music. Despite being a musical film, the songs do not leave an impact. Still, this film that talks about ideals, values and hopes should be watched with children.

Why watch- If you love characters like ‘The Lion King’, Simba, Mufasa, Scar, want to live the nostalgia or want to show children a family film that talks about ideals and hopes, then you can watch ‘Mufasa – The Lion King’.
