MPSC Question: ‘Do your friends drink alcohol…’, such a question was asked in the Civil Services Examination, created a ruckus!

The question on which there is controversy in the State Service Exam Pre Paper of Maharashtra Public Service Commission is as follows-
Question: Your friends drink alcohol and try to influence you to do the same. If you don’t want to go with them, and want to keep yourself away from the habit of drinking, what will you do?
A) I will tell my friends that my parents have forbidden me from drinking alcohol.
B) I will refuse to drink alcohol.
C) I will drink alcohol, just because my friends are drinking.
D) I will refuse and lie that I have liver problems.

Why controversy over alcohol question in MPSC?

When the photo of this question part of MPSC Pre Question Paper was posted on social media, a fierce debate started. Most of the people started criticizing this question except the overall paper. People are asking what is the relation of this question with Civil Services Examination? Is it right to ask such questions in the examination to select civil servants?

Some people even said that ‘the Commission has deviated from the main objective of the examination, which is to select candidates to perform the responsibilities of public service. This topic has no direct relation with the role of a civil servant. There are some people who are expressing the possibility of this question being given for the purpose of testing the ability to take moral decisions. While there is a debate on this issue on the internet, there is no response from the Commission at this time.
