Movie Review: Weak story made ‘Bhaiya Ji’ dull

Manoj Bajpayee is one of those actors who have strengthened independent cinema in Bollywood. In his/her career’s 100th film ‘Bhaiya Ji’, he/she has reached the audience in an action avatar different from his/her image. This tale of revenge, created from the soil of Bihar, has been made as a single screen action entertainer, which definitely has some strong desi action scenes, but the weak script has made ‘Bhaiya Ji’ lose its glory.

Story of ‘Bhaiya Ji’

The story of the film is of Bihari Babu Ram Charan Tripathi alias Bhaiya Ji (Manoj Bajpayee), who is the father of Robin Hood in his/her area. Sometimes the entire area used to tremble with his/her name. With his/her shovel he/she has brought many big animals to the next world. But because of his/her promise to his/her father, he/she leaves all the bloodshed and starts living a decent life with his/her stepmother and brother. Then the painful murder of his/her innocent brother forces him/her to pick up the shovel again and become fierce. We will have to watch the film to know who gets burnt in the fire of Bhaiya ji’s revenge.

‘Bhaiya Ji’ movie review

The film’s director Apoorva Singh Karki had received a lot of praise for his/her realistic style debut film ‘Sirf Ek Banda Kafi Hai’. This time he/she has made a masala film completely different from that film with a larger than life hero. But, there is neither newness in the story, nor sharpness in the treatment. Rather, the film treatment and slow motion action reminds you of superhit films like ‘Pushpa’ and ‘KGF’. Due to weak story and dull screenplay, ‘Bhaiyya Ji‘ is not able to create the charm of Pushparaj or Rocky Bhai on screen.

There are only two emotions in this film – sadness and anger. For this reason also this film does not become a complete entertainer. Even the dialogues are not such that one can whistle. Yes, some of Manoj Bajpayee’s desi-style action scenes can definitely be clapped on a single screen. A major weakness of the film is the average production design. The production designer has to understand that the audience has already recognized Lucknow on screen so much that you cannot settle everything from Bihar to Delhi there. The way Delhi’s railway station is shown in an important scene of the film, it seems completely fake. There was also a need for agility in the editing of the film, so that the first half could be made tighter.

Talking about the strong side of the film ‘Bhaiya Ji’, it is Bhaiya Ji himself i.e. Manoj Bajpayee. Despite his/her normal height, he/she has suited the powerful character of Bhaiya ji. However, the amount of discussion that takes place in his/her period films is not visible on the screen. Maithili (Zoya Hussain), who supports him/her at every step, has done sharp action. Despite her limited role, Zoya impresses. At the same time, the character of Suvinder Vicky, who has proved his/her acting mettle in the ‘Kohra’ web series, has not been developed properly. Apart from establishing cruelty in one scene, nothing is known about who his/her character Chandrabhan is and what he/she does.

Talking about music, Sandeep Chowta’s background score is good. The songs of the film ‘Chakka Jam’, ‘Bagh Ka Kareja’ and ‘Bhai Ka Viyog’ have become good.
