Movie Review: Tangalan

Pan India star Chiyaan Vikram has won many awards for his/her acting along with a National Award. Years ago when Salman Khan’s Tere Naam was released, people came to know that it is a Hindi remake of the Tamil film Sethu starring Vikram. Later, his/her bond with the Hindi audience was strengthened with films like Aparichit and I. Now once again he/she is presenting a period drama like ‘Tangallan’ under the direction of Pa Ranjit. This film which has already been released in Tamil-Telugu, has reached the Hindi audience this Friday.

What is the story of the movie ‘Tangal’
The base of the story is KGF i.e. Kolar Gold Field, which is set in the backdrop of the 18th century. This is the story of that era, when kings like Raja Chol and Tipu Sultan had tried to extract gold from Kolar Gold Field and now the British had their vulture eyes on this area. To extract gold from this desolate place, British officer Clement chooses Thangallan (Chiyaan Vikram). Tangalan, who lives in the Arcot area of Karnataka, belongs to the oppressed and exploited community, whose land has been usurped by the landlords and their families have been forced to become bonded laborers. Tangalan, along with his/her wife Gangamma (Parvathy Thiruvothu) and children, embarks on a mission to find gold with British officer Clement for the salvation of his/her entire community. he/she explains to the people of his/her group that with the gold they will get by digging for gold, they can free the land mortgaged to the landlords and live a happy life. But this path to find gold is not at all easy. The area of KGF is dominated by illusory powers. The empress of those powers is Aarti (Malavika Mohanan), who destroys anyone who casts an evil eye on her area. On coming here, Tanglan realizes that Aarti, who appears in his/her dreams, has a deep connection with his/her ancestors. Will Tanglan and his/her group be able to escape Aarti’s wrath? Will they be able to extract the gold and move towards a golden future? To know this, you will have to watch the film.

‘Tangal’ drags in the second half

Director Pa Ranjith has his/her own fan following. he/she has given superhit and popular films like Kabali and Kaala with Rajinikanth. This film, which was released on 15 August in the South, has received a good response. Pa Ranjith also takes his/her style of storytelling forward in Thangallan. he/she has proved to be the best in every way in depicting the 18th century environment and the way of speaking, dressing and atmosphere of the people of the community. The style of guerilla warfare in the flashback scenes is spine-chilling and Ranjith has been successful in adding strong horror effects to it. It takes some time for you to get into the world of Thangallan, but then you get familiar with those characters. Ranjith sensitively highlights the casteism prevalent in the society of that time. Visually the film is quite rich. The first half is strong, but the confusion of the flashback creates confusion. This is the reason why the film drags in the second half. Pa Ranjith should have worked a little more on the backstory. The film’s length of more than two and a half hours is also a hindrance and the film starts to feel heavy on you. The climax is strong. Music by composer GV Prakash makes the story even more powerful.

The cast of ‘Tanghalan’
In this film, which rests on the shoulders of Chiyaan Vikram, the actor has proved himself in every way. his/her hard work for the character is clearly visible on the screen. he/she has many roles in the film, husband, warrior and a leader who redeems his/her society. he/she has done every shade well. Malavika Mohanan as Aarti has supported him/her well in the guerilla war scenes. A mental connection is felt between the two characters. Parvati Thiruvothu in the role of wife Gangamma has given light moments to the story with her playfulness. Daniel Caltagirone, Arjun Ambudan and Pasupathi have done memorable work as supporting actors.

Why watch: Those who are fond of mystery-thriller stories and for the acting of Chiyaan Vikram can watch this movie.
