Movie Review: More than a game, ‘Mr. and Mrs. Mahi’ is a story of living dreams and finding oneself

This is undoubtedly a beautiful era of cinema, where films of every colour are being made. One of these colours is that of a husband and wife who have given up on their dreams, becoming each other’s support and going to any extent to fulfil those dreams. Director Sharan Sharma has brought a similar story with the fresh pair of Rajkumar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, who have given up their dreams and have joined the hustle and bustle of life, but then a passionate game like cricket not only brings them closer to each other at one point, but also becomes the reason for the victory of life.

Story of ‘Mr and Mrs Mahi’

The story begins with Mahendra (Rajkummar Rao) who lives in Jaipur. he/she once played at the club level, hitting fours and sixes like MS Dhoni, but failed to reach the state and national level. Now his/her condition is such that he/she has become a salesman in his/her father’s (Kumud Mishra) sports shop. Due to his/her failure in cricket and the popularity of his/her actor brother at home, he/she is suffering from an inferiority complex of not being able to do anything in life, but then his/her marriage is fixed with Dr. Mahima (Janhavi Kapoor).

Like Mahendra, Mahima’s nickname is also Mahi. When the father introduces son Mahendra to Mahima’s family as a successful businessman, Mahendra tells Mahima the truth that he/she is a loser in life. Impressed by his/her honesty, Mahima agrees to marry him/her. After marriage, Mahendra comes to know that like him/her, Mahima is not only crazy about cricket but is also a dashing batsman. he/she too had to become a doctor under pressure from his/her father. Now he/she is trying his/her best to make Mahima a cricketer. But in this journey, Mahendra also has to go through his/her ego, pride, insecurity and self-realization of his/her dreams.

‘Mr and Mrs Mahi’ movie review

Director Sharan Sharma, although moves forward with the good intention of a husband pursuing his/her wife, takes so much time in establishing the characters and the story that the first half of the film becomes slow and cumbersome. The film gains pace in the second half, when cricket becomes the basis of the story. But here Sharan Sharma has failed to show the passion of a crazy game like cricket. However, he/she has succeeded in showing the emotions of hope, despair and insecurity.

The screenplay of the film could have been tighter. The dialogues are also average, but in terms of music, the songs ‘Dekha Tenu’, ‘Agar Ho Tum’ and ‘Roya Jab Tu’ have been made well. There are some issues in the film which are worth paying attention to, why is it important for parents to know what is in the mind of their children? And real happiness is not outside but inside you.

The film is rich in terms of acting. Rajkumar Rao has once again blossomed with his/her talent as Mahendra. Despite being the hero, he/she has portrayed his/her arrogant and insecure grey side in a powerful way. This is Janhvi Kapoor’s second film with director Sharan Sharma. Before this, she has worked with him/her in ‘Gunjan Saxena’. The director has extracted a good performance from her in this film as well. Janhvi has been completely honest with her role. Kumud Mishra, Zarina Wahab and Rajesh Sharma have been perfect in their roles.

Why watch- People who are fond of movies based on topics like family and cricket can watch this movie.
