Movie Review: Kajol and Kriti’s ‘Do Patti’ is wrapped in suspense, there is a connection with Alia’s ‘Darlings’

When love is replaced by violence in the relationship between husband and wife, the entire family and especially the children get hurt. This wound of domestic violence is sometimes so deep that the entire house falls apart. Ironically, such a dangerous form of violence is called ‘domestic’, due to which most of the people outside the house do not even interfere in this mutual matter between husband and wife. ‘Do Patti’, the debut film of actress Kriti Sanon and writer Kanika Dhillon’s banner, presents this bitter truth of domestic violence wrapped in the spicy packaging of the rivalry between two sisters.

Story of ‘Do Patti’

The film begins with Inspector Vidya Jyoti (Kajol) of Devipur, a small hilly area. Vidya gets a phone call to lodge a report of her husband assaulting his/her wife. Vidya Jyoti is a policewoman who follows the rules whole-heartedly. Her colleague also refuses that in such a case of domestic violence, no wife speaks against her husband, there is no use in going there, but Vidya Jyoti, firm on principles, sets out on the path of her duty. A sensational story begins from here.

This is the story of two twin sisters, Saumya and Shaili (Kriti Sanon), who are less sisters and more enemies. Both are completely different from each other. While Soumya, like her name, remains calm, gentle and timid, Shaili is bold. Saumya, who is unable to bear the pain of losing her mother in childhood, also struggles with anxiety attacks. Shaili is unable to tolerate the attention Soumya receives due to her illness and leaves no opportunity to humiliate her. Even when Dhruv (Shaheer Sheikh) comes into Saumya’s life as love, she snatches him/her away.

Circumstances change in such a way that Dhruv chooses the homely Soumya instead of the modern style as his/her wife. Shaili can no longer bear this. Here, after marriage a different color of Dhruv emerges. he/she beats Soumya every now and then and starts getting back closer to Shaili by crying about Soumya’s illness. Now will Shaili settle scores with Soumya by snatching away Dhruv? Or will Vidya Jyoti be able to get justice for Soumya? All these twists and turns will be known after watching the film.

‘Do Patti’ movie review

The story, screenplay and dialogues of this film, directed by Shashank Chaturvedi, have been written by Kanika Dhillon. Despite sensitive topics like domestic violence and mental health, the screenplay is interesting. According to her style, Kanika has added many twists and turns to it. The story unfolds layer by layer. However, some important secrets are already understood.

There is also a courtroom drama in the film, which should have been made more sharp. he/she has remained lackluster due to weak defence. Also, the domestic violence track between Dhruv and Saumya (Saumya wanting to have a child and Dhruv losing his/her temper in anger) also bears the imprint of Alia Bhatt’s banner debut film ‘Darlings’.

Kanika’s co-producer Kriti Sanon told that the issue of domestic violence in the film was her idea. Kanika incorporated this into her story of sister rivalry. It seems that Kriti might have given Kanika the example of ‘Darlings’.

Talking about acting, the work of both Kajol and Kriti Sanon is excellent. his/her screen presence captivates. Shaheer Sheikh has got a strong role in his/her debut film, he/she has played his/her character well, but there is some hesitation in him/her at some places.

Rest of the film, set in beautiful valleys, has wonderful cinematography by Mart Ratasep. ‘Shayed Yeh Pyaar Hai…’ has become a good composition in Sachet-Parampara, while ‘Raanjhan’ seems to be a copy of the song ‘Raanjha’ from the film Shershaah. Nevertheless, this film with a sensitive subject is worth watching.

Why watch- This sensitive film, wrapped in a blanket of suspense, can definitely be watched once.
