Movie Review: Anjini Dhawan’s ‘Binny and Family’ is an emotional film that brings two generations closer.

From ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ to ‘Baghban’, many films have been made on the relationships of children with their parents, but Hindi film writers have not focused on the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren or the generational distance between them. The pen has hardly moved. But now on this very subject, writer-director Sanjay Tripathi has brought an emotional film ‘Binny and Family’ giving a beautiful message.

Story of ‘Binny and Family’

The film is about free-spirited and rebellious Bindiya Singh alias Binny (Anjini Dhawan), who lives with her parents (Charu Shankar-Rajesh Kumar) in London. Her life changes every year when her conservative grandparents (Pankaj Kapur-Himani Shivpuri) come from Bihar to live with them for 2 months.

For Binny, these are those two months of the year when the scenario of both his/her home and life changes. The bar of the house becomes a book shelf. The party photos hanging on the walls disappear. Her mom and her short dresses go back in the closet. his/her late night party stops, because according to grandfather, if the women stay out for so long and something bad happens then where will they show their face. Grandma sews his/her ripped jeans with needle and thread. Overall, his/her entire lifestyle is worth it. So, she keeps counting the days until two months pass and the grandparents go back.

Later in the story, when Binny, shortly after the passage of those two months, hears that the grandparents have returned due to a medical emergency, her anger reaches the seventh sky. She becomes adamant about not bringing them back, but this insistence becomes so burdensome to her that her entire thinking about her grandparents changes. Her life takes such a turn that the grandfather with whom she could not sit even for a minute, becomes her best friend. She starts talking openly with him/her on everything from shopping to love philosophies. After all, how does this generation gap between Binny and his/her grandfather get bridged? You will know this after watching the film.

‘Binny and Family’ Movie Review

The film shows that if these two generations come out of the realm of ‘what will they understand’ and ‘they don’t know anything’ and try to listen to each other, understand and change themselves a little accordingly, then this gap of generations will not only disappear. Rather, the combination of the experiences of the elders and the energy of the children can add new colors to the lives of both.

The intentions of the film are clear, its soul is in the right place. The film becomes emotional at many places in the second half. But the screenplay should have been a little tighter. Its length is its biggest drawback. Many scenes like Binny’s party, drama rehearsal and Bihar seem repetitive. Due to all this it seems that when will this end?

Rest, if we talk about acting, Pankaj Kapoor, Rajesh Kumar, Charu Shankar, Himani Shivpuri are experienced actors. Everyone is perfect in their roles. However, Himani’s share of scenes has been less. But the discovery of the film is Anjini Dhawan. he/she has done very mature acting in his/her very first film. Even in scenes with heavy emotional monologues in front of a veteran like Pankaj Kapur, she does not fail. In such a situation, it would not be wrong to say that he/she is not just another star kid, but a promising young actor.

Talking about the technical aspect, the impact of the film’s low budget is visible on its production value. There is a lot of scope left in editing, if the film was 15-20 minutes shorter it would have been more effective. Still, this family film with good intentions of connecting two generations deserves a watch.

Why watch- This family film with a noble message of connecting two generations can be watched once.
