More than 300 students returned to India amid violent protests in Bangladesh, know what is the situation


New Delhi : Amid the deteriorating situation in Bangladesh, Indian students are returning home somehow. On Friday itself, more than 300 students passed through the border point in the Northeast. In Bangladesh, about 64 people have died in clashes between students and pro-government activists with security forces on the issue of reservation in government jobs. The government there has ordered the closure of universities.

Students were studying MBBS

Many of the students returning home were pursuing MBBS. Most of them were from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir. The two main routes used by the students to return on Friday were the International Land Port at Akhurah near Agartala in Tripura and the International Land Port at Dawki in Meghalaya. The students said they were waiting and monitoring the situation but finally decided to leave Bangladesh temporarily. The internet was almost completely blocked on Thursday. Telephone services were also badly affected. This left them cut off from their families.

Internet is down, contact with family cut off

Aamir from Haryana said that I am a second year student at Marine City Medical College and Hospital in Chittagong. The situation is getting worse and many restrictions have been imposed. That is why we have come back. Many other students have also come back. The internet is not working and we are not able to contact our families. We could not get air tickets and instead of going home, we had to go to Agartala by road. Mohammad Faiz Abdullah Khan, another student of the same college, said that as far as he/she is concerned, everything was normal till Tuesday. After that he/she was asked not to go out of his/her residence or hostel campus.

Students are also coming via Bhutan and Nepal

Officials in Meghalaya said over 200 Indians have crossed the border due to the protests. Some students from Bhutan and Nepal have also entered India. An official said 67 students were from Meghalaya and seven from Bhutan. he/she said the state government was in touch with the Bangladesh High Commission and Bangladesh Land Port Authority for the safe return of the Indians. India on Friday termed the violent protests in Bangladesh as an “internal” matter of that country. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said around 15,000 Indians, including 8,000 students, are currently staying in Bangladesh and they are safe.

What is the matter?

University students in Dhaka and other cities of Bangladesh have been holding rallies for several days against the system of reserving public sector jobs for relatives of war heroes who fought for the country’s independence from Pakistan in 1971. The students’ protests continue demanding reforms in the reservation system. During this, about 30 people have died and more than 2,500 people have been injured due to violence in the capital Dhaka and elsewhere.
