‘Mirzapur’ fame Shweta Tripathi said- To tell you the truth, I feel bad for Golu’s character

Be it the innocent Shalu Gupta of ‘Masaan’ or the domineering Golu Gupta of ‘Mirzapur’. Shweta Tripathi brought life to these characters with her acting. In a special conversation with Shweta Tripathi recently, she talked a lot on many issues like film career, increasing violence against women, changes in the film industry. Here are the main excerpts from the conversation with her. Family members did not stop her from watching movies
To tell you the truth, Veerana is my favourite movie. I have seen many movies in theatres because I was never stopped from watching movies at home, rather I was asked to watch them myself. I believe that whatever you are exposed to in childhood, whatever you read, whatever you listen to, the same is reflected in the result when you grow up. I wanted to act since childhood but I also used to work. I am fond of telling stories. The medium may be theatre, radio, street plays or film screen. Live expression in theatre is different. Theatre helps a lot. I also did theatre during my job but there was a problem at that time. Actually, I used to get time in the evening due to my job but theatre would not work according to me. I made an All My Tea Production with theatre artists like me who were working. In this, we all used to rehearse after getting free from office after 6 pm.

There was a character named Zenia Khan in the show ‘Kya Mast Hai Life’. I auditioned for it and was selected. I think you should be ready for the opportunity. Grab it when you get it. I didn’t know what I actually had to do. Many people work with a goal in mind. This trick works on them too. I only understand a few things like how many theatres my film should be released in, what does the film want to say, what is new in it? How much did the film earn, I don’t understand the box office figures. This is not my priority.

‘I wish I was as fearless as Golu’

My character of Golu in Mirzapur was liked a lot. It is a strong character. If you ask me if this character relates to you, I will say that I wish I was also fearless like Golu. Well, I am fearless but not as much as Golu. To tell you the truth, I feel bad for Golu’s character because she was a simple girl but her sister and friend are snatched away from her life. She has become like this out of compulsion. I was thinking that maybe I will start getting roles like Golu but it is not so. My web series ‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein’ is about to release, my character in it is very different. I am thankful that all the roles I have got till now are very different from each other.

‘Lucknow is my maternal home’

My shooting happens in UP but the best thing is that my maternal grandmother’s house is in Hazratganj. I spent the golden time of my childhood here. Even today, my maternal uncle and maternal aunt’s family live here. My father is a retired IAS officer so he/she was on duty outside. I had to come to Lucknow only during holidays. We used to roam around a lot with our cousins here. Fights with them, watching movies on VCR, many such memories are associated with this place. Earlier, I was a non-vegetarian so I liked the Galavati kebabs here a lot. Sharma’s tea and especially the chaat here is excellent. I remember that when I used to come to Lucknow in my childhood, I used to come laughing but when I used to go, I used to go crying. My father is from Allahabad so I am completely a girl from UP and I am proud of this.

‘OTT has opened up the world’

Mirzapur is a series that has received a lot of love from the audience. Its fourth season is being written right now. The more the series has been liked, the more our responsibility increases. The audience expects to see something new and unique. If we talk about OTT, not only actors but writers, lightmen, spot boys are also getting a lot of work. The size of the screen has been increased due to OTT. Now we can watch foreign films while sitting in Bihar. The world has opened up with OTT. According to me, art and stories should not be bound by language. Earlier, one had to search to watch international award winning movies but now it is not so.

‘I want to play the role of a lawyer, a heist and a teacher’

I want to play the role of a teacher. I wanted to become a lawyer. If I get the role of a strong lawyer, I will definitely do it. I wish to play a role like the professor in ‘Money Heist’. These are three such roles that I want to do with great passion. I am just looking for an opportunity.

“Only when we bring about a change in ourselves will society change”

Shweta Tripathi says that the environment has changed now. Girls are coming out of their homes and taking responsibility of their families. However, incidents like Kolkata break their morale and create an atmosphere of fear in them. It is very sad to see and hear the kind of incidents happening with girls these days. The kind of incidents that have happened, even animals do not do that. To what level are we stooping or trying to stoop. What is more saddening is that those who do this do not even have any shame. We are not against any person, but we have to stand together against such barbaric beasts. I think that until there is no solution, nothing will be solved. We can write articles, share stories, protest on social media. People are angry but they are pointing fingers at each other. Nothing will happen with this, until this change does not happen in every home. We have to start the change from our home.
