Minority Protection Forum in Bangladesh takes out protest march in Agartala

The Forum for the Protection of Minorities in Bangladesh organized a massive protest march here on Sunday to condemn the ongoing horrific atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh.

The march started from Agartala Press Club and was participated by journalists, club members, various social and cultural organizations and general public.

“In response to the recent incident in Bangladesh, we are organizing a protest rally under the banner of “Forum for the Protection of Minorities in Bangladesh”. The general public as well as journalists, club members and representatives of various social and cultural organizations have participated in the rally. This is the first phase of our protest; “We will send a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the Governor and we will continue this movement on a larger scale,” senior journalist Pranab Sarkar told AN.

The procession passed through the streets of the city and ended in front of Rabindra Bhawan in Agartala. Notable attendees included Press Club President Jayant Bhattacharya and senior journalists Subal Kumar Dey and Pranab Sarkar as well as other journalists and intellectuals who expressed their solidarity during the event.

Agartala Press Club President Jayant Bhattacharjee said there are deep concerns about the increasing attacks on minorities – Hindus, Christians and Buddhists – after the change in the Bangladeshi government.

“It seems that there is a deliberate plan to weaken the Hindu community in Bangladesh. We believe that the government should take action to protect the lives and rights of minorities. We have a feeling of solidarity with Bangladesh because we speak the same language, Bangla. Personally, I believe that the current government is funded by terrorist organizations and has an anti-Hindu agenda, inspired by Muslim fundamentalism. Today, we are here to protest for the safety of minorities in Bangladesh,” he/she said.

Kamal Goswami Maharaj, Baishnab Wakti of Gaudiya Math, Agartala, said, the purpose of our rally is to protest against the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. The aim of this rally is to call for an immediate end to violence against minorities.

In particular, since Sheikh Hasina’s sudden resignation on August 5, ending her 15 years in power, there have been multiple reports of attacks against Hindu homes, temples and businesses. Hindus are the largest minority community in Bangladesh.

The interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took office on August 8, three days after the law and order situation had completely deteriorated and there were no police personnel to protect the people.

Leaders of minority communities met Yunus on 13 August and expressed concern about attacks on their homes, businesses and temples.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on Yunus to ensure the safety of minorities and also expressed concern about the safety of Hindus during his/her Independence Day speech.
