Milkha Singh Olympic Dream: The big dream of Flying Sikh Milkha Singh, which could not be fulfilled till date

New Delhi
Legendary sprinter Milkha Singh was just inches away from winning an Olympic medal 60 years ago. It was his dream to see an Indian win a medal in athletics at the Olympics. However, his dream remained incomplete and on Friday night he said goodbye to this world. Milkha Singh’s 400m record was held for 38 years while the 400m Asian record was held for 26 years. Singh is survived by three daughters Dr. Mona Singh, Alija Grover, Sonia Sanwalka and son Jeev Milkha Singh.

Golfer Jeev, who is a 14-time international champ, is also a Padma Shri awardee like his father. According to officials, Milkha Singh will be cremated with full state honors at 5 pm on Saturday. Milkha was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of PGIMER Hospital in Chandigarh. The former athlete, also known as the ‘Flying Sikh’, was admitted to PGIMER on June 3 after oxygen levels dropped after being treated at Mohali’s Fortis Hospital for a week.

Milkha Singh Story: How did Milkha Singh get the name ‘Flying Sikh’? Know the story of that race in Pakistan

Milkha had once said while addressing young athletes, “Before he died, Milkha Singh has a dream – India should get medals in the Olympics. Before I die, I want to see an Indian athlete win a medal in the Olympics. India no longer has a single Olympic medal in athletics in the Olympics. Milkha became popular when he finished fourth in the 1960 Rome Olympic Games with a timing of 45.6 seconds. By that time, it was the closest an Indian athlete has ever won an individual Olympic medal.

Later, of course, P.T. Usha missed out on a bronze medal in the 400 meters race at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. She clocked 55.42 seconds and missed out on the bronze medal by just 0.01 seconds. Chandigarh’s seven-lane cinder track within the sports complex in Sector 7 is still home to aspiring and experienced athletes.

Milkha Singh dies: When 10 thousand women lifted the burqa at the Lahore stadium and said – this Sardar has done wonders

Athletics coach Shiv Kumar Joshi told Chandigarh, “He used to visit the stadium once or twice a week and often discuss training methods with the coaches. His house was close to the sports complex. We also went to meet him as he was the President of Chandigarh Athletics Association (CAA) from 1978 to 1999. Milkha regularly energized the youth.

How Milkha Singh got the name ‘Flying Sikh’, the story connects with Pakistan

He told the athletes, ‘I trained very hard for the Rome Olympics. I often vomited blood after tough training sessions. I was confident of winning a medal. But it was not my day. What I failed to achieve in my life, you should try to make India proud.
