Medical Seats in India: Great news for MBBS students! 75000 medical seats are going to increase, know the government’s plan

A target has been set to increase 75000 medical seats in the country in the next five years. Union Health Minister JP Nadda said that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has increased 25 thousand UG and PG medical seats in the last four years. The target of increasing the number of MBBS seats to more than one lakh has been achieved one year before the stipulated time limit. he/she said that in view of the increasing demand for medical professionals, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a target of increasing the existing medical seats by 15 thousand every year in the next five years, which is being achieved.

MBBS Seats 2024: 12 thousand seats have increased this year

Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra says that so far this year, 12 thousand seats have been increased in medical courses and soon the target of 15 thousand will be achieved. The total number of MBBS and super specialty PG courses has been increased. The number of beds in medical colleges will also increase. Every year new medical colleges are built and at the same time there is a demand to increase the seats of MBBS and PG courses.

The demand for MBBS course is constantly increasing

This time a record 24.06 lakh registrations were done for the NEET UG exam and the demand for MBBS courses is constantly increasing. Dr. Aruna V. Vanikar, President of NMC’s UG Medical Education Board, says that the NMC is increasing the number of MBBS seats as per the instructions of the Union Health Ministry. Along with this, regulations are being prepared keeping in mind the improvement in the quality of medical education.

Now the number of government medical colleges in the country has also increased. he/she said that when there will be more MBBS seats in the country, students in remote areas will also benefit.

Number of medical colleges in India

The number of medical colleges was 706 in 2023-24, which will increase to 766 in 2024-25.
The number of medical colleges was 387 in 2013-14, which will increase to 766 in 2024-25. This is an increase of 98 percent.
During the same period, 379 new medical colleges have been established. At present, there are 766 (423 government and 343 private) medical colleges in the country.

Number of MBBS seats in India

The number of MBBS seats in 2023-24 was 1,08,940, which has increased to 1,15,812 in 2024-25. There were 51,348 medical seats in the country in 2013-14 and in the last 10 years, there has been an increase of 64,464 i.e. 125 percent.

PG Medical Seats in India

Medical PG seats have increased from 69,024 in 2023-24 to 73,111 in 2024-25. There were 31,185 seats in 2013-14, which has increased to 73,111 in 2024-25. There is an increase of 39,460 i.e. 127 percent in the number of PG seats.

More than 20 thousand applications have been received on NMR so far

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has started the registration process for all MBBS doctors on the new portal National Medical Register (NMR) and so far more than 20 thousand applications have been received. It is mandatory for all doctors to register on the recently launched NMR portal. After registration, doctors will get a unique ID to practice in India.

Doctors who are already registered on the Indian Medical Register (IMR) are also required to register on the National Medical Register (NMR). NMR is a major component of the country’s Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. It will be a part of the Healthcare Professional Registry. NMR will have data of about 13 lakh allopathy doctors in the country.
