Medical Colleges News: New facility is going to be implemented in medical colleges, NMC’s big decision for students

Guidelines are being issued continuously for the safety of doctors as well as students in hospitals and medical colleges. Suicides of students studying medicine are also a serious problem. The National Medical Commission (NMC), under the Ministry of Health, has issued a warning to colleges that are lax in the safety of students. Colleges have been asked to ensure safety measures, and some other measures are also being taken. NMC has made mentorship programs mandatory in every medical college. Dr. Aruna V. Vanikar, President of the Undergraduate Medical Education Board of NMC, says that mentorship programs have been made mandatory in all government and private medical colleges of the country, especially to provide emotional support to new students. Not only this, parents will also be able to come to the college for meetings with students and faculty members. New students will be able to share any kind of problem with their parents when they meet their family members. Parents can talk to the management about it. This will be possible on the lines of parents-teachers meetings held in schools.

What is Mentor-Mentee Program?

Dr. Vanikar says that every mentor (faculty member) in a medical college will have to adopt three students. The special thing about this scheme is that these three students will remain in touch with the same mentor till the fifth year of their studies i.e. during internship. Every year the student will not have a new mentor. Not only this, a mentor will add three students every year, in this way during four years a mentor will have 12 students and the same 12 students will be able to share their experiences with each other.

Every year, three students will be attached to a mentor who will remain attached to the same students for four years and then till internship. This will help senior and junior students to work together. The bond of friendship between students will become stronger. The mentorship system will help students to get emotional and moral support when they face challenging situations in their lives.

This will prove especially useful for outstation students, who have to face life in a metropolis after coming from outside. If students get timely emotional support, then cases like suicide will also decrease. Also, the management has been instructed to be very vigilant to prevent the use of drugs and alcohol in colleges. The management will not be able to escape its responsibility.

The students studying medicine are themselves ill

Students pursuing medical studies are falling prey to diseases like depression, anxiety, stress even before becoming doctors. This has also come to light in a report of a committee of NMC. NMC not only has to update the course for medical studies but also has to remove the stress and fear of the students. After going through tough circumstances, the students who take admission in MBBS course are dominated by issues like burden of family expectations, hostel, exams, fear of ragging.

NMC has prepared guidelines regarding all these problems, which are being issued. Now there is a need for medical colleges to also follow the instructions of NMC completely and for this NMC will have to be strict. There is also a plan to take action against colleges that do not follow the instructions.
