Medical Colleges in India: ‘344 new medical colleges opened in 10 years, MBBS seats doubled’

Total Medical Colleges and MBBS Seats in India: The government has given special information about medical colleges and MBBS seats before NEET counseling 2024. Talking about the development of medical infrastructure in the country, Union Health Minister JP Nadda told the Lok Sabha that 344 new medical colleges have been opened in India in the last 10 years. Till 2014, there were 387 medical colleges in the country, today their number is 731. Talking about the government’s commitment to improve medical education and health service, he/she also gave information about AIIMS and medical seats.

Medical Seats in India 2024: How many medical seats are there in the country?

JP Nadda said in the Lok Sabha, ‘Undergraduate medical seats (MBBS) have also increased from 51,348 to 1.12 lakh, which is an increase of 118 percent. While the number of postgraduate i.e. PG medical seats has increased by 133 percent.’

he/she said, ‘Before the first NDA government (Atal Bihari Vajpayee government), there was only one AIIMS in the country. During the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government, 6 new AIIMS were opened. In the last 10 years of the Modi government, 22 AIIMS have been approved. Of these, 18 are operational and four are under construction.’

Nadda said that ‘Health of the people is the priority of the Narendra Modi government. The world’s largest health scheme is being run in India under the leadership of PM Modi. The allocation of health budget has also been increased by 164 percent. In the year 2013-14, the health budget was Rs 33,278 crore, today that budget has increased to Rs 90,958 crore.’

The Union Minister said that under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, ‘about 12 crore families, that is, more than 55 crore people have been provided free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh. 1.73 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs have been established. This scheme provides free medicines and other health facilities including tests. It has reduced the out-of-pocket expenditure in the country from 62% to 47.1%.’
