MBBS Success Story: The journey from begging and picking garbage to becoming a doctor, this is how a monk changed a girl’s life!


Success Story of Pinky Hariyan: This is the year 2004, when there was a little girl named Pinky Haryan, who used to beg in the streets of Mcleodganj, Himachal Pradesh. his/her family was very poor and they used to collect garbage for food, sometimes they used to eat the food found in the same garbage and lived in a slum. One day Pinky met Lobsang Jamyang. Lobsang was a Tibetan monk and director of the Tong-Len Charitable Trust. This meeting was going to change Pinky’s life.

Jamyang saw Pinky begging. They went to his/her house in the slum. Despite the hesitation of Pinky’s father Kashmiri Lal, Jamyang convinced him/her for the girl’s education. It was from here that Pinky’s education began and this path took her to become a doctor.

With the help of Jamyang, Pinky got admission in Dayanand Public School, Dharamshala. In 2004, Tong-Len Charitable Trust opened a hostel for poor children and Pinky was one of the first students of this hostel.

In the beginning, Pinky used to miss her home. But she continued to concentrate on her studies. he/she understood that the only way out of poverty was education. Ajay Srivastava, president of NGO Umang Foundation, has been working with Sanyasi Jamyang for 19 years. Ajay tells that Pinky was diligent in her studies from the beginning.

Pinky’s hard work paid off. he/she passed his/her 12th examination. After this he/she also passed the NEET exam. NEET is an all India examination for medical studies in India.

Tong-Len Charitable Trust helped Pinky. The trust raised the money from its UK branch. With its help, Pinky went to China in 2018 to study MBBS.

Pinky told that her poverty background became her biggest strength. Which motivated him/her to become financially stable and help his/her community. Pinky’s story has inspired not only her family but many people in her community.

Recalling her childhood, Pinky said, ‘Poverty has been the biggest difficulty since childhood. It was very sad to see my family in trouble. When I started going to school, my aim was to become successful in life.
